I worked with a fellow carpenter & joiner back in 1995 who claimed to be a Royal Marine in the Falklands war, he even had an F&S knife painted on his toolbox. I have never been in the armed forces, but have always had an interest in British military history from childhood. The upshot of it was, we having a chat one night after work, l got hom to start talking about his career as a Commando, all of what he was telling me is readily available in different books and the many documentaries. I had to walk away in the end, he was getting aggressive when l starting asking him inconvenient questions. I have a wide knowledge about these sort of things, but would not dream of trying pass myself off as having served in HM armed forces 🇬🇧

Well done. I had a similar experience with a friend who became a cadet instructor. During his training he had to walk up a hill in the Cheviots. The sort of hill that old women walk their dogs up every weekend. To celebrate he had an iconic Falklands tattoo done. You can probably guess the one. I am ex army, and gave him an ultimatum - get it removed or we don’t speak again.

I have had two people come for interview in civvy street claiming to be ex SAS. First question: what’s your number? Next question: there was no next question. Can’t remember your number after fighting for Queen and country? I couldn’t forget my number (40 years later) if my life depended on it. But I did call a couple of friends who are ex-regiment - having started with me in Catterick many years before. I also rang the HR department at Hereford, just be on the safe side. Turns out one of them had been a musician in the Life Guards. The other had never been in. Absolute fantasists. I found out years later they were still spinning the same stories.

I didnt serve but I have lived around soldiers all my life. I am an Army brat and my father was in The British Army for 20 years of my life and lived in Germany inuding Berlin. I can pretty much spot a Walter Mitty most of the time. Sometimes ai get it wrong though.
