This route used to be street level, and many surface streets would cross the tracks.

Ahhhhh, this is the way they used to go, unlike today they enter the tunnels slowly and drag ! As a kid in the 70's, the M-1's used to fly through the tunnels ..... Had to be doing 80, what a racket, the sounds were incredible and fun !

Is the camera facing Northbound? Now if you actually caught some LIRR footage near Coney Island that would be something. It's ridiculous that there is no LIRR service to Coney Island, but though I believe there was a century ago

So happy that the LIRR mainline has three tracks now. It definitely reduces congestion on the mainline. I live close to the Far Rockaway branch and I also use Lynbrook sometimes too because there’s more service so I never use the mainline to get to the city but now that there’s three tracks, the LIRR is much more resilient.

What was the derelict car on the right at 49:20? Looks like some old troop train coach or something

Ive noticed the bells inside the operators cabin durong the videos. Does anyone know what they mean short blasts vs long blasts etc. Also is the use of this partly or wholly the conductor communicating wkth the engineer? Sometimes i have noticed the use of the bells in correlation to the speeding up or slowing down of the train. Does anyone have any insight on this ?

Oh, my! I used to ride this train from Manhasset to NYC back in the 1980's & 90's. $5.25 for a ticket if I'm not mistaken. Also from Great Neck to Penn in the mornings and Penn to Great Neck in the evenings they would run express non-stop. 25 minutes in to/out of NYC. Friday nights was the 11:46 to Bayside to catch The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the UA Bayside, always walked in at 12:07am as the opening credits rolled. I remember Manhasset getting the ADA upgrades (still the same) and I see Port Washington has not changed since then either - not even the platform lights! Always a great ride, and those old M3's are so much quieter than the new stock. Thanks for sharing this trip!
