Reminds me of an old saying: if you don't want to get wet, what the He'll are you doing in a canoe.😂
@BeyondTheCampfireByKeithАй бұрын
Thnx for your comment...and certainly some truth to it as well, pretty funny too :)...Been canoeing for over 50 years...consider myself pretty experienced...only twice in that 50 + years have I tipped a canoe...once with an inexperienced person holding down the front end (also on the Buffalo)...and once as described in the video. Events in the video did play out as described though...tying it to a Skull Bluff legend...well...all a tongue and cheek bit of color to an unfortunate mishap and the legend...just a play on the many other legends and folklore stories associated with the Buffalo River...thanx again...:)

Oh I’m certain you in fact did hear a coyote, and turn your canoe over, both are quite common along the river. But as far as the bat house aka skull bluff. The NPS give the place its name a few years back, I cannot remember what year for certain I’m guessing mid to late 90s. I’m 54 and have played along the Buffalo all of my life, less now than ever. As the river is not the same with all the tourism and over aggressive NPS. It just to be a very enjoyable place and there are stretches that aren’t overrun. But for the most part it’s lost to most of the older locals. To much publicity. The kayaks have pretty well taken over. I’m proud you enjoy the tranquility, but it’s a far cry from the place I grew to love as a young man. And not for the better. I still use the lower Buffalo quite a bit, but I’ve traded my boat for a horse and have land and a cabin adjoining the lower Buffalo river wilderness. But even that is changing, more and more people every year. If you ever want to learn more about the river and hear the true facts I’d suggest, not talking with people that didn’t grow up here. Talk to people that have spent a lifetime here. Feel free to comment on this as I get notified and I’d be more than happy to share information. Thank you

I’m not sure where you’ve gotten this misinformation, but very far from the truth. You might want to stop and visit with some of the local people, and not believe everything the NPS or some if not of the canoe rentals are telling tourists. This story of “skull bluff” is very far from any truth. The place was know only as the bat house for years, until the NPS decided that the name glamours enough for the tourism. Being born and raised here I can assure anyone that it will forever be the bat house to anyone that truly knows the area. But this story is quite funny. Thank you very much for the laughs. I certainly hope people won’t believe it.

Thanx Rod for the comment. Just to set the record straight...the events described in the story actually did happen...camping across from Skull Bluff, the coyote howl just before a random gust of wind tossed my canoe across the gravel bar, the next day's gust of wind that shoved my canoe into a sweeper causing the capsizing and the ruined camera gear...all of that did happen. As far as the legend of Skull Bluff...it's just one of many such stories that swirl around the Buffalo River...stories like Ghosts, and buried treasures, and even Big Foot sightings. It's a harmless, tongue in cheek story, like all the others, that adds color to a wonderfully beautiful location. Anyway...thanx again...all comments are welcome.

Thanks for sharing, Keith. One of the most iconic sounds of my life is the sound of that lighter. I directed a play a few years ago which required the use of a Zippo lighter, and especially the first time we used the prop, it awakened such a strong essence of Daddy, I had to take a moment to move past it. He would love that you are documenting these moments, although he was too humble to understand how he figures into the title. Thanks, again!

Nice video Keith, I can relate to your video because I used to smoke a pipe, my wife loved the smell. I still have my Zippo's. One is plain, the other was my uncle Rene's (my mother's brother), it has a picture of the U.S.S. Redwing - MSC200 on the front of the lighter, that's the minesweeper ship he served on when he was in the Navy. JT

Thank you for an excellent video Keith. So well narrated and produced it has been pleasure to watch. Obviously Adam has had a big influence on your craft, particularly the high contrast images and the dark skies. I too am a landscape photographer (fergusbrucephotography) but I mainly tend to work in colour (HDR) these days although my passion is monochrome, in particular architecture (not on the web site). In the days of film I used to use a red lens filter to darken the skies but I've yet to experiment with the on a DSLR (not sure if that would work or not?), or in the software. Any advice on how you achieved this would be very much appreciated. Keep up that good work!

Hey there...thnx for your comment, very much appreciated. i plan on making a short video or possibly writing a post on my blog site (beyondthecampfirebykeith.blogspot.com) about how I achieve the Ansel Adams look...just have not done so yet. To keep it short and to the point, i will take a color image but look for qualities in the sky and landscape that will translate well into black and white. I achieve the dark sky in two ways usually combining two techniques to get the final results. i use Silver Efex Pro2 from Nik which is plugin software inside my Photoshop Elements main image software. Within Silver Efex you have various color channels that can be manipulated along with several filters that can be applied (Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Green....) using a combination of these along with a tweak of contrast and brightness, is how I get the dark sky. There are also various sliders and curves that can be used along with selecting different types of simulated black and white film types. There are various other tweaks i do depending on the image, but fundamentally I try to keep it rather simple. Thanx for asking. I also use a polarizer filter which deepens the blue of the sky which in turn helps to generate the dark b&w sky
