this is actually very good conversion! although you can cleary notice that it is not native but "altered" (the objects appear in depth, but also kind of "flat cardboards" because, hey you can create duplicates and reposition them but you can not make them anaglyph) But nevertheless, kudos to the converters, because it is a process that requires frame-by-frame adjustments

It is actually converted by using a grey scale depth map. similar to how you can create a depth map in after effects. So its not even close to cutting out items and placing them in a depth field as you suggest. its way better than that as the depth is determined by how it is shaded in the depth map.
