Another great industry the UK had, now lost to China. So many great products designed and manufactured in the UK now lost. UK was an amazing place to be for inventions, innovation and manufacturing, we seemed to have lost the way. So sad to see.

It was bought from a Chinese lighting wholesaler in 2011. They can still be obtained online, but were only ever sold in Asian countries.

Perhaps Basil Antonis? I have one of his early examples on my website at www.lamptech.co.uk/Spec%20Sheets/D%20FLC%20Thorn%202D16.htm. This lamp was invented by him in 1980-1981 together with John Chapman, who I once had the pleasure of meeting.

Interesting to hear! Didn’t Thorn also have a lamp factory in Africa at that time, perhaps jointly owned with other lampmakers? I have some Thorn GLS and Mercury lamps from the 1970s that appear identical to the British-made types, but marked Made in R.S.A. One is also marked ELMASA, Electric Lamp Manufacturers of South Africa. Presumably that was a joint venture like ELMA (Electric Lamp Manufacturers of Australia) and ZELMA (New Zealand), whose factories were run jointly by Thorn, Osram-GEC, Crompton and Philips to produce lamps for all of those brands at a single factory for the region. But I have not been able to find much information about lamp manufacturing in Africa.

Hi James I wondered what lighting Company you worked for (if you did). I worked for Thorn Lighting International Thorn House during the 70's and in Mitcham, Surrey during the 90's. I also worked for Luxram Electric and Philips in City House during the 80's.

Good to hear from another ex-Thorn! I also started at GE/Thorn in the 90s but in discharge lamp engineering at Leicester, shortly after Mitcham had been relocated to Kingston so maybe just after your time. Then a few years with Iwasaki Japan, before finally moving to Sylvania Belgium labs almost 20 years ago and still there now. I once had a visit to Philips City House and Hamilton in the early 90s, and remember their impressive lighting showrooms! Did Luxram have its own separate factory from Philips? I recall that several of the quartz halogen machines at Thorn Leicester had brass labels indicating that they had been built by Luxram Electric during the 1970s.

@@jamesdhooker Hi James good to hear from you and to know your background. I visited Leicester on a number of occasions everybody always welcoming. I worked in sales admin' during my employment. Before Luxram were taken over by Philips it did have a factory in the east end of London (before my time there). Philips used Luxram to intergrate other lighting companies they bought out, e.g Stella lamps, Iris display etc. I was many of the made redundant staff by GE at Mitcham during the mid 90's. Brilliant observation! In fact in the mean time I added a small steel tube at the face of each burner, to provide a hydrogen flame pilot light and perform the same function. Thanks to the high flame speed of hydrogen it does not blow out, and also does not create soot that would otherwise foul the adjacent main burners.

My father was one of 4 men, including his brother, sent to the Corning Glass Works in Rhode Island to learn how to use these. We moved from Chesterfield to Doncaster in 1951 when the factory opened. He was there until he retired and his brother, my Uncle went to Australia. I am still in touch with my cousin in Perth.

I worked at GE Ky Glass Plant in Lex. Ky. from 1981 till 2007 , we were the worlds fastest and most productive for many years. As a shift mechanic and later a millwright I maintained every piece of equipment in the plant at some time or other, and installed many others over the course of my employment till I retired in 2007. What an adventure it was.

Did you ever have anyone crash one of these machines?
@rogerfriend2890
@rogerfriend2890 7 жыл бұрын
As a matter of fact , I did, but more often than not, the machines would crash themselves. For any number of reasons. One of the best parts of the job was you never quit learning new things. The best I learned about machinery that is operating properly is that it will do the same exact same thing every time it goes through its cycle of operation, any deviance from that indicates a problem. A new squeak or an odd jerk at some point in the cycle and so . So learn your equipment and its function then the rest is just nuts , bolts and a good torch and welder, A knowledge of electrical is also a must, it just makes the job easier and Im all for making the job easier or "efficient". Your question implies you have ran into those situations of human and mechanical "interactions", lol . Some folks just don't have any mechanical aptitude at all. but they sure know how to push the buttons on a control panel. LOL Thanks for the question, it takes me back.

Yes I work on Glass press forming machines, we make plates, bowls and tumblers and some pitchers. Sorry for the much delayed response,I seen that these machines use Lincoln Lube for the lube system. Did this place have machine repair around the clock or did you have a weekly call-in rotation?
