Nothing wrong with "budget" radios as long as they do the job required by you. I have several gmrs and a couple hams here. Being where we are at, very very rural..lots of mountains and hilks and treess in the way of signals...i have gotten up to 4.6 miles away on radio to radio comms. Some comms is better than zero comms in a shtf senerio, if cell towers or internet or both go down...something is a whole lot better than nothing...also p.s. that little hole in the base of the antenna takes a hex key to loosen it up and remove it if you want to replace the antenna...the vonnectiin of the antenna will be a sma male on the antenna..most handheld are a sma female on the antenna. Great video

I love this radio. Mine came with a 15 inch antenna. I was listening to a couple of guys talking and one sounded like he was sitting right next to me indoors! 23 bucks form Amazon. 28 with tax. And the keypad lights up!

Frs no, gmrs yes. Frs are always limited to either .5 or 2 watt depending on channel. Gmrs have significantly higher power limits on certain channels. Gmrs License is easy to get. It's like sixty bucks and last for I think five years. No classes needed.

@@bobbob-uv1oi GMRS license is $35 for ten years, and applies to entire family. Also, although these can communicate legally with FRS users, these are classified as GMRS radios, so the FCC requires a GMRS license regardless of configured transmit power level. (Part of the reason is true FRS license-free radios have fixed, not removable antennas, and don't support repeaters or wideband, which this radio does.) The GMRS license requires NO test; just pay your $35 and you, and your family are good to go for a decade. I guess navigating the confusing site is the real test. :)

tHAT DARN PLUG -- LOL -- same thing happened to me for about an hour--- then i watched a video with a Radio Store guy doing a review -- he said be sure the Plug on the unit is all the way in -- i got up and looked at it and sure enough -- it was lacking about 3/16 of an inch -- i shoved on it and wala-- it began to work... also found out, Turn on Unit First -- the plug in your Radio in on off mode -- then turn it on -- the Unit will recognize it. Nice Video.

During covid I walked 7 miles a day and did what he did with 2 GM30s and a simplex repeater. 8 foot tall green corn field ground level you can't talk 1/2 mile. Hill in between/// not even a half a mile. Rock face mountain to bounce a signal off of/// 6 miles. Mississippi river talking between 2 lookouts. Very clear with 12 miles line of sight. I still do this daily walking the dog locally with a J pole antenna on the house roof and the same two GM30s. 3 miles is about what they will do. Less with leaves on the trees and I have noticed with spring time sap running in the trees. The distance has been cut some.

I will be getting my GNRS license later yeah I get lots of kids in my area on those FRS radios I do have a pair of those too they're cobra it's also kind of funny because a dentist office that's not too far from my house they use FRS radios to communicate from within the office from room to room so I can listen to all their transmissions I don't talk to them but I listen you won't get any personal information but you can kind of hear some interesting things that they're talking about yeah they're at work and discussing their personal lives sometimes.

one thing that I thought of is when getting out some distance when you transmit. this unit will record your audio plus any noise coming in with your carrier, and then rebroadcast the noise along with the voice so you may get more noise with this then you would if you were talking to another person.

Is there a reason to get a GMRS radio instead of an amateur HT, and then programming it yourself? Maybe learn something? Like not to prop an antenna against an aluminum ladder? You'll still have to beg for PL Codes from the locals and enter those.

@GMRSRadioonaBudget Жыл бұрын
their are many Ham's that get a Gmrs license, why would someone prop an antenna up against an aluminum ladder? they must not know much about radio's and antenna's, if you are talking about the ladder in the video, it is a wooden ladder, I think I even mentioned it in the video, and I have never had to beg for a pl code, most are public they want people to use their repeaters

Unlike amateur radio, there's no coordinators for GMRS. As long as you don't create a collision with another PL Tone it's fair game. And as it's a simplex parrot the repeater channels should be irrelevant.
