53:58 - I have to disagree here. Nineveh was the Capitol of Assyria. Assyria was bloodthirsty, and their soldiers were relentless in war. Historical documents describe Assyrian soldiers cutting off the hands and feet of their foes to torture them. Even Nahum ends with a question to Assyria - “Who has not felt your endless cruelty?”. Nahum 1:15 described Assyria’s fall as a GOOD thing, even! I wouldn’t say it’s racism to view your foe in war as… a foe. And God wanted him to stroll into its Capitol and preach a message of destruction. I feel like Jonah’s desire for their destruction is perfectly justified from a human standpoint - Jonah son of Amittai is also mentioned in 2 Kings 14:25, and only 2.5 chapters later in 2 Kings 17:5, Assyria destroys Israel! However… we don’t serve a God who has human justification. We serve a God whose ways are higher than ours - and that’s one of countless reasons He’s so good.
