Tranes are junk... I had a $10,000 Trane XR17 system put in by them. Purchased and Installed by an Authorized Trane Dealer, Larson Air Conditioning, Scottsdale, AZ. Nothing but problems from day 1. Had to replace the Heat Pump after 3 weeks. Brand new and leaking from the factory. Then it took over a year to fix a problem that would cause it to quit cooling (over 12 times in the first year). My 15 year old no name AC system I took out was way more dependable than this Trane system. Then the Air Handler coil broke in year 2. I called Larson Air Conditioning and they sent a service rep out.. said all my Freon was gone.. they said it leaked out somewhere.. he could not find the leak he said... said it must be under my concrete floor since he couldn’t find it... he offered me a $300+ test to do a UV test.. I knew the chances of that were almost nothing so I called BS. .. so I told him to fill up the system with freon which cost me $900. 2 days later no cooling again.. Fed up with Larson I called another Trane dealer for a second opinion.. in 10 minutes he found that the Air Handler coil was leaking...thats where all me freon was going.. outside in the condensate line.... but Larson guy couldn't find it? while the coil in under warranty (but backordered for over 3 months and counting.. still not in) it would cost me $2500 for the freon and labor to have the coil put in. . So during the first year with all the problems ... so by year 2 it would cost me $3500 to fix this Trane AC system that’s “Under 10 Year Warranty” And don't expect any support from Trane Customer Relations either.. after 2 months of repeated requests from Trane Customer Relations for a refund or any financial assistance.. they say they cant help ANY. So Im left with no option but to leave this unfortunate and honest review. I have since removed the 2 year old Trane system (coil has been backordered for over 3 months and still not in). No coil.. No heat in winter… I was forced to take out the Trane POS and install new Carrier system which has run flawless.. The current Trane isn’t the old Trane that had a good reputation ever since bought out by American Standard. “Its NOT hard to stop a Trane”

thanks man I think this is my exact problem with my armstrong air it's only about 10 years old or so and this is the only video I could find with as drastic of a grinding noise and first thought was it was a bearing so I'm glad I was on the right track

I have a TRANE XL15i heatpump which is not cooling. Freon mainline doesn't get cold. Unit is 13 years old with zero problems until now. All led code lights indicate proper operation(inside air handler and outside unit). Interior fan and exterior fans operate fine. When it is calling for cooling I have noticed that about every 5 minutes I hear a sound that sounds like the unit is trying to run(a deep hum sound) but sound stops immediately. All fans continue to run fine. The startup capacitor (45uF 440v) looks a little rusty on topside but not a large bulge. I have not tested it. I have not tested for 220v continuity on the relay. Any suggestions? Thanks

Could be a bad capacitor, burnt wire, need a hard start, a locked up compressor or low on refrigerant and going off on overload. My only suggestion (that you may not like) is to call someone licensed and qualified to troubleshoot it for you.

@@sethfunkhouser7909 Thanks very much for your response. I will checkout the capacitor (it's a single 45uF@440vac) today and see if it's bad. I have ordered a new one as well as a new relay just in case, but they won't be available till early next week. If the electrical stuff looks ok, then I'll have to call our service guy. Thanks again for an informative video and your prompt response.

@@sethfunkhouser7909 I tested the capacitor and no voltage changes across the cap. It was bad. Lucky enough there was an Ace Hardware Store in my area that stocked the cap I needed and replaced it with the bad one. Sure enough the unit is now working. Thanks very much for your help. Saved me several dollars once again.

Must be a lennox or made by lennox. Shoulda replaced with Carrier that way in 3 years he doesn't have another coil. Absolutely no confidence in lennox. I talk everybody into replacing with Carrier.

out of curiosity, wouldn't you have read continuity to ground with your meter? or it was not a direct short?
@sethfunkhouser7909
@sethfunkhouser7909 4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching!! So the problem with most low voltage shorts is that the common almost always goes to ground (if it is a dedicated common) therefore Almost every low voltage power wire is going to show resistance to ground. What I had to look for was how much resistance there must be a load in between the power and the common to slow the electrons. I may have use the wrong terminology I suppose a direct short would indicate it was shorted to ground. It was more of a regular short circuit to common (which does go to ground if you want to split hairs). But the low resistance on the contactor sped the electrons up so much the amp draw on the 24 V was tripping the breaker.

How much would add refrigerant normally cost?
@sethfunkhouser7909
@sethfunkhouser7909 4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching- there is not really a simple answer to that question. It really depends what kind of refrigerant and what your local stock pile and prices looks like. It’s going to be a different market everywhere. I would call a couple of your local contractors and ask how much they charge per pound for refrigerant.

I would have checked subcooling and superheat first, then checked the liquid and the high pressure gas pressures in heat mode to see if there was a major drop across the evap coil, normally it will be maybe 35lbs max difference. That will let you know if your restricted at the evap, your suction was possibly low because there was no coil left to boil off the refrigerant and the outdoor txv was holding it back causing it to stack it up as liquid because it was grossly over charged. 410a will slam into high pressure when it's over charged. I've seen so many install screw ups over the years that it just comes with experience. You did a good job and you learned what to look for next time👍👍
