Thank you for this video. I may have to do a similar operation for an old tupan, so this may come in handy

What was the tool called?
@georgetirebiter43437 ай бұрын
He called a "lapping tool". I think this usage of lapping means to fold something around. But if you look it up on a search engine, you may only get grinding wheels and abrasives. I suspect any skinny spatula, bent at the end, might do.

Hi, thanks for video , confirms what I have elsewhere about the 2014 CX Team. Mine is virtually unused thanks to the poor FSA PF30 BB which has failed (twice). Third time lucky I want something more substantial but want to retain the FSA crank/chainset if possible. Is there a similar (ie metal, screw together) Works Performance version to suit 30mm crank? Thanks

Thanks for the video. Do you tune your surdo to a frequency or do it by ear, as I can not seem to find a guide as to what the different size surdo drums are tuned too. Although I do appreciate different bands might have different ideas on what sound they want so will tune theirs higher or lower.
@pbassred6 жыл бұрын
I tune the surdos in 4ths relative to each other. Different blocos have different idea about what pitch suits them. I tried using a tuner once but the note is so short that its difficult for a tuner to lock on. We have discussed recording the pitches we like, but phones don't reproduce low frequencies well so you would need to take head phones with you. An the end of the day, the pitch can chance with the weather in the middle of a parade and it more important that the head it tuned evenly to itself. Stress not.
@robertpaterson73116 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for your reply and information. I have also found that IPhone's do not hear low frequencies (similar to that of a large surdo) which would also hinder tuning apps working. Think you are right to make sure the drum is evenly tuned. Thanks. P.S. - maybe you could do a video on tuning surdos ?

Which of the many models of Wheels Manufacturing BBs did you install? Something like this? wheelsmfg.com/bottom-brackets/pf30/pf30-bottom-brackets/pf30-threaded-zero-ceramic-bb-black.html I have a feeling this is not confined only to the CX team model, my Road Comp 2014 may have the same issue. My Japanese LBS serviced the existing BB but he tried to tell me about another issue - neither of us are fluent in each others' languages...

I think that both bikes have the same frame so the limitations about which kind of bearings you can choose would be the same. I bought the "Pressfit 30 to outboard bottom bracket Shimano 24mm compatible". With the standard bearings because I was changing from the 30mm FSA crank to 24mm Shimano. update story:- After six months it developed a creak which I fixed by re-torquing it. However I had a conversation with one of the tech guys there. Their view is that ceramic bearings ARE faster, but are also more brittle. The standard ones are more durable and therefore more suited to a CX bike.

@powerinformation10 жыл бұрын
is there an option to have no resonant head?
@pbassred10 жыл бұрын
Not really. The tensioning rods aren't mounted to the shell like a rock kit. The heads are pulled tight by rings with the rod mounted to them by lugs. Each head is the anchor for the other. There are surdos that DO have shell mounted tensioners, that you can stack inside each other for easy storage. Schools use them. I've never heard one but I am told that they sound like s**t!

In the UK the number plate isn't a licence. It is an identification plate that lives with the car forever, unless you specifically change it. So unless it is something unique like "1 BA55", that you can sell on, there is no value in them. Even then, you sell the number, not the physical plate. They die with the car.
@sbc38855011 жыл бұрын
Why destroy the license plates? Can't they be transferred to another vehicle?

Not on a surdo. I tried on a repique once and it turned it into an entirely different drum. Samba reggae players do that because it gives a dark sound and is self damping. The style I play uses a lot of hand damping to keep the timing right. Since napa heads are only mylar with a layer of naugahyde you might as well save money and do it yourself. I see drums like that with gaffa tape over the impact point. I don't know if that's for additional damping, a repair, or to save it from wearing.
@siamak1312 жыл бұрын
Thanks a bunch. this is actually very helpful. I need new heads on my surdo and I have been undecided about what to put on. Have you tried any of the Napa heads or a mylar head with your own naugahyde stretched on it? Or have you tried the mylar head with a patch or foam taped on it?

I remember seeing a picture of drum kit with 2 surdos as kick drums. I don't know about "recommend", but if you figure out a way to put side supports on it, its possible. Also unless you intend to be taking the heads off all the time you won't be able to damp it with a blanket.

do you suggest ever using a surdo as a kick drum in a drum kit setup? i may want to buy a surdo, and itdbe cool if i could get more then oneu se out of it

Unfortunately, on Renault engines from around 2000, if you score the camshafts you score the bearings. The bearings are machined directly into the cylinder head and rocker cover. So you would need to change the whole top end. @zolbad this video it 18 months ago. Alloy wheels don't sell for much.

It took an afternoon. Personally the natural head works best for me. The odd thing is that although this sounds rough with the Weatherking, I met a guy at the Sargento Pimenta event with Weatherkings on his 18 inch drum which sounded great. Go figure!
@pbassred12 жыл бұрын
Drove like an arm chair. The stereo sounded like it was in a shed, but it swallowed SO much cargo. The Audi was nowhere near it for luggage space. Renault messed up their engines though. The camshaft bearings are machined directly into the rocker cover now. Once it got a worn bearing, the only way forward would be a new cylinder head and rocker cover.
