"To make paintings in a capitalist world, you need to earn money, otherwise there is no way you can continue doing what you do, unless you have this pot of gold sitting somewhere". Roxy van Bemmel Thank you for this sentence that helps me go through uncomfortable discussions. 💙

Wow, what a dedication to keeping in touch with these numbers and expectations and showing this in a transparent way. Inspiring approach and very useful content since a lot of times these things are not being spoken about

Thank you so much for sharing this! A lot of the artist perspectives I see here on KZbin are US based so as fellow Dutch person in the art industry I loved being able to see what your experience was like. I graduated art school last year and I'm still very much figuring out how to make this art career work and what to expect, so thank you for helping me with that haha. I hope you'll continue to grow and be able to pursue projects that give you happiness and fulfill your creative drive ❤❤ (and ofc that you'll be able to make a comfortable living income off of this!! omg) I'll definitely be watching your journey from now on :)

This was very interesting! :) I'm from Belgium and just became self-empoyed on the side (after a break of a few years), just got monitized on youtube and also got about 100 euros this quarter!! But it's my main activity so I have no idea what to do to actually earn money, but I guess I'll figure it out eventually hahaha

So many non-european views on here, thought I’d add some euro perspectives :-) congrats on the monetization! Felt like a biggg milestone for me as well last year.

I have just embarked on my own art career but I will have to maintain my other self employed income to support myself. Hopefully I will be able to reduce that dependency as time goes on. I can only imagine how stressful it might become to be totally reliant on making art for my sole income and therefore stifle the creativity.

Oh those first years were very insecure for me as well! Kinda wish I would’ve made videos like this at that time, because 5 years ago I would’ve believed my numbers now to be impssible. But it’s not, it just takes time and a network of people.

Art sales have been down in the US. The economy was actually fine but the media and the election screwed things up over here. Next year I’m scaling back on in person shows because the dumb policies will more than likely tank the economy if they’re enacted. I didn’t vote for that idiot.

I read about the art sales plummeting this year A LOT. I mean it makes sense giving the state of the world. What goes down though must go up again sometime.

i appreciate you doing this breakdown because it's realistic. so many on here saying they're making a living off art when half the time they aren't at all...or they have a partner who is paying for everything or most so they can say they're a full time artist.

Fantastic video Roxy. Thank you for your honesty and sharing this information with us. It helps all of us so much. I love watching your journey. I was not very excited or interested in selling prints of my work but the more videos like this I see, it makes a lot of sense to paint once and sell many times over. I need to start separating my fine art originals mentality and realize a lot more earning potential is with the prints. Especially with shipping concerns. Thank you again. Your work is absolutely beautiful.

Thanks Debbie! Prints can definitely be a good addition and the nice thing is that it’s all in your own hands to decide what kind: editions, hand pressed lino’s, silkscreen, open editions? I think it’s mainly nice to offer an affordable option that anyone can afford. They might even come back later for an original :-)

Your artwork is awesome. This kind of gallery display is not going to work. Not your venue if you want to get out there and reach people who will value your art. Only a few locals, passerby folks and your fans. I so understand how much effort you went to so to make this a successful selling event. Too small of an audience. You hopefully will find another way to find people who will appreciate your art.

Hi! Thank you for appreciating my work and watching my videos :-) I understand what you’re saying, but I find the options as an independent ‘self-taught’ artist in NL very limited. There’s (almost) no fairs to apply to without gallery representation for example. Do you have thoughts on this?

In my art class, the professor mentioned that it’s not common for artists to sign their paintings on the front. Instead, they usually write something on the back and add a small, subtle signature on the canvas. The reasoning, as he explained, is that a prominent signature on the front can detract from the artwork itself. The focus should be on the piece, not the artist. For those who own the painting, the back typically provides all the necessary information about the artist, and if anyone asks, the owner can share details about who created it. When displayed in a show, the artist’s name, along with some context about the work or the artist, is usually presented on the side or with accompanying information.

Thanks for sharing! I think you can do whatever you want as it’s your own painting, but there’s definitely a lot of variety :-) Personally, sometimes I sign, sometimes I don’t.

Hej! Thank you for sharing this. You are not the only one out there. The money thought is constantly running through my head. When I was in university (graphic design) I didn't want to work with corporate companies, because I was so caught up in my values and images. When I started working, the "real world" hit me hard. And now, 4 years after graduating, there are days when I really blame myself for choosing this career. For the last 2 years I worked as a freelance designer and illustrator, but the pressure of finding enough jobs and satisfying client needs really took a toll n my creativity. So I know, I had to change something. Half a year ago I moved to another country (which is lovely), but now I am also faced with being the foreigner with a (slowly vanishing) language barrier. To take off the pressure from myself, I decided to look for a job, locally. But there aren't any. The hand full I applied to, didn't even bother to invite me. And this made me really scared and sad, as if I f*cked up my whole career. After months of months of waiting and being afraid, I just decided to open a new creative studio. This time not under my actual name. In this studio I want to offer design, illustration, workshops. But also trying to bring my art into the world. If struggled a while with running 2 different accounts, for client and personal work, but this didnt work out for me. It ended in two d*ad accounts. So I want to go fully in and put it all in one account, even though it might not be the smartest idea. But otherwise: where is the line? I want to try so many things, like to use so many techniques, it's hard to separate. Looking into your newer vlogs I feel that you figured out a way that works best for you! I am very impressed by your professionalism and how you manage (and communicate!) everything. Thank you for sharing your journey! :)

Hi there and thank you for sharing your story! First off, good luck with your new studio. Sometimes a fresh start, a new perspective, is really what we need. Thank you for your compliments! It’s definitely not all roses and sunshine all the time, a lot of ups and downs, but I try looking more at the long term success instead of the short term ‘fails’ now as I think I can get quite caught in the moment. Documenting my practice has definitely helped with this though :-)!
