I wish more people could accept this kind of portraits of themselves. Why do people insist on being polished-instagram-approved-celebrity-like-beauty 😢 it’s so boring. I would love my portrait to be done in this way rather than a traditional portrait 😅

I love non-traditional self portraits, the kind that are reminiscent of Picasso’s way of painting himself and how it changed as he aged and as he became more creatively mature and realized art isn’t linear I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a traditional, accurate portrayal especially because how you want to portray yourself is different from person to person but I have always liked those non-traditional versions

Absolutely gorgeous and compelling work Roxy! I love the idea of challenging myself to do a series of paintings within a period of time. I did it for an auction I participated in about few years ago and I have to say because of the time crunch I was the most productive I had ever been. Maybe I’m more prolific under pressure who knows lol, but I enjoyed the focus element. I have a lot of time to paint now, so there’s no pressure but I think I want to try. I’ve never done a series, so that might be a good start. I’m also a little afraid to try oils (I work in acrylics) because of the smell. A few questions: What is your opinion of water mixable oils? What is the size of the substrates u used for the series? And do you find working on linen makes a difference in the painting process? I love the long format painting videos so much..thanks for sharing your process!❤

Thank you Ann! As for the series, go for it ;-) For it always helps to make it as easy as possible for myself: prep X amount of canvases, hang them, organize materials so I don't have to look for them. You can always 'change plans' but this way it's as easy as possible. As for the oils, I've only been using them for a few years because of that reason! They seemed to intimidating but once you read a bit of basic information it's actually not that bad haha so just try them. I'm personally not a fan of water mixable oils. With my normal oils I don't use terpentine (the smell and toxic) but I use linseed oil and citric thinner. The canvases are all 40 x 60 cm and I like working on linen because of the texure. The one I use is a bit finer than the cotton ones I'm used to. I feel like I can be more gentle with texture with linen versus cotton.

This was so helpful to learn all the behind-the-scenes planning of your own exhibition. As an artist myself, I can relate to feeling afraid to be seen and the whole concept works so well to explore these difficult emotions. 💕💞

Huge congrats on your awesome show! So jealous I can't see it in person...what with me living on the other side of the world and all :D I'm also more sure than ever that I don't have the energy or drive to design and run my own event like you did omg. I think you made the right call on going with the better frames, even if it was a risk. They make such a huge difference, and I've been told by my own collectors that they appreciate not having to re-frame the art they buy. Personally, I try to stick with higher quality materials from the outset since overall, it means less chance buyers will want to replace them and thereby contribute to the waste problem. I hope more of your paintings find new home! I did well this month: sold 3. It's such a nice feeling when you know someone somewhere is potentially standing there, looking fondly at them ^^
@whatsaroxy
@whatsaroxy 2 ай бұрын
Ah thank you! And congratulations on your good month! Three in a month is really impressive :-) Agreed on the framing, absolutely. I’d rather get one good frame than a shitty one just ‘for show’ but boy do they add up haha. I try to get frames that, if I they don’t sell, I could re-use for another work. Some super old frames are of such bad quality that they almost won’t allow that so that’s really a waste. And the work just looks way better in a good frame. Event was a lot of work, but also good ‘training’ ;-) the next one will probably be much easier. Enjoy your day!

Oh I was checking on your KZbin a few days ago to see if I've missed any videos because I've not seen you in a while! Now I know why haha. Congratulations on the exhibition! I can't wait to see the whole collection together. Also I totally agree with you about frames, which is why I try my best to avoid them! Here in Australia, even a small A5 custom frame would set me back about $65+ and I don't have space to store framed work anyway. I have so many paintings I've bought from other artists that I've not been able to put up because it's going to cost me a bomb to frame them T_T One quick thing I noticed towards the end of this video is that the music gets slightly too loud and starts to drown you out, so perhaps for the next one it can be a littler lower so we can hear you better :)
@whatsaroxy
@whatsaroxy 2 ай бұрын
Ah thanks for your comment! Yes this kept me busy for a while 😂 I have a few videos worth of film to go though! Yesss, (custom) frames are insane. It’s so nice to just drop them off and know they’ll be pretty but doing it yourself saves so much money it’s worth it. And I think works on paper almost always need a frame for a collector to know what the ‘potential’ is. Unless maybe they’re an artist themselves haha. Thanks for letting me know about the music! I’ll check it better next time. - Roxy

I truly relate to only being able to get a deeper understanding of why you made a certain work after some period of time. It might feel so obvious after a month or a year, but in the moment it feels almost out of nowhere.
