2:08 A midrash says (regarding Exodus 15:20) that the drums were so that the men would not hear the voices of the singing women. (Regarding Devorah, I don't know.)

In Orthodox Judaism, Jewish men are prohibited from listening to women sing and therefore, Orthodox women do not sing in the presence of Jewish men (as that prohibition does not apply to gentile men, they are allowed to sing before gentiles, although they often don't out of a sense of modesty). Although this is very commercially restricting, there are female Orthodox singers who perform at female-only events - there is no prohibition against cultivating an audience.
