In backward races, cars were constantly teleporting backwards, breaking the game. I made sure it didn't do that in these races. I also increased rubberbanding. So when they get to original location they will slowdown and go at the same speed as other real players. But they will never teleport to the original location. and they can make mistakes because they are going so fast.

Hi, I don't know. What I tried to test in porsche this year was AI spawning in multiplayer. I was successful. There were even cops. I only did it alone, I didn't test it with anyone. But I can't deal with it rn. I need to finish my stuffs in nfs3 and nfs2 first.

Positional Updates only synchronize positions of the players' cars. This doesn't cause any input lag, stuttering or desync in client's game. If you played multiplayer/online games high stakes and later (including modern NFS games), they generally all use this method. Controller Updates have to synchronize everything. And distance is very important here. This can cause input lag, stuttering or desync (This is usually rare for desync. Stuffs that desync are usually caused by game files being different from host or a difference in game's executable file). But this can give a good experience for clients that are close to host (usually up to 3000 km for someone. 5000 km may also be ok). But especially if very far away (like 10000 km) it becomes almost unplayable for client. Each has its own pros and cons. Controller updates promise accurate and realistic gameplay. Generally ideal for local games. You can even play Hot Pursuit game modes with up to 8 real players. You can compare this to playing a two-player split-screen mode on 8 different computers. You can never cheat on this connection type. If you try to do, the game will either crash or cause desync. That's why it's the safest connection type. Positional updates give the best experience to entire client regardless of distance. It's usually used for online. But the behavior of other players isn't accurate in each player's game. This may not provide a realistic gameplay experience. More ideal for competition. Hot pursuit mode cannot be played with this connection type. There may be crashes like in video. I'm not very familiar with modern NFS games. But I remember that there were no cops and even AI racers in games like Most Wanted and Carbon (correct me if I'm wrong). And of course it's possible to cheat with this connection type (if game doesn't have cheat protection). This game has been played with Controller Updates until now and it was known that this method was only one. As result, by digging into game, I learned that developers had already implemented this, So I revealed it, and we tested. (Actually, these were written in text of the game. But no one has discovered this feature until now. Except me.) There are quite a lot people playing this game multiplayer on our RRP discord server. This method will be a precedent for people even far away.

Can you test it with more players please? Because 2 players generally works better than more than 2. And are you sure its working? Because even with 2 players only the positional updates are too accurate for EA Seattle's skills, especially the car hitbox, no kangaroo jumps etc

Man, this is awesome. I wrote a MAP file parser based on a spec I found, but had trouble determining how to move through the parsed sections. IIRC they were offsets into the EADPCM MUS files. How did they align with positions on track? Keep up the great work :)

Thx :) Let me guess, isn't it wiki.multimedia.cx? I didn't understand anything there either. I learned this by myself by digging into the gamecode. Currently, I can say that have disassembled 90-95% of music code for NFS2 and NFS3. Thanks to this, I was able to implement interactive music in the nfs3 psx tracks Nescafe made for nfs2. Otherwise, this wouldn't be possible just by looking at the files. The process is as follows: The game first checks the track file. Because the positions are there. Then it looks at the map and compares the value of this segment. It saves "SCHl" offset, which is beginning of each piece whose compared value corresponds to the MUS file (for whichever offset value is pushing, for that piece). And finally, it goes to the MUS file and compares this offset and that section is played. In short, this is how it is (Sorry for my bad explanation.). Difficult for me to explain in more detail. Because there are many calculations. EA did this pretty tryhard. But they did a good job (except for 22050 hz). But I can understand this situation since file sizes were very important in those years.

But thanks for providing your explanation, warms my heart to know people are still tinkering with NFS2 and 3 25 years later. Very impressive that you reverse engineered so much of the code too. Not sure if you're aware, but there's an NFS4 PSX beta available with debug symbols, I was using that to add car parsing from that version into OpenNFS. You may be able to learn something from that codebase too!
