It seemed strange to hear all that talk of railway history without a mention of Charles Tyson Yerkes! For those who don't know what that means, please check out Jago Hazzard's videos about railroads in and around London. If you like Steve's content I think you'll enjoy Jago.

Do you have a source for Middle Island being called Middle Island? I haven't found anything online except for this video. Most government sources I've found seem to want to call both islands Centre Island and pretend that they're all just one island, or in the case of the TRCA, just call the smaller island Centre Island.
@notsmoothsteve
@notsmoothsteve 2 күн бұрын
Nothing I can say is truly definitive. Wikipedia and OpenStreetMap both back me up, but of course they're not official sources. Both Google and the City's online map tool seem to lack a specific name for it, just calling it part of the Toronto islands.
@ceruleanstone
@ceruleanstone 2 күн бұрын
Regarding nonsensical island naming, you forgot South Island, which, naturally, is east of and slightly north of Middle Island. Out of the 14 other islands, the only major island that South Island is clearly south of (southwest of, to be accurate) is Algonquin Island.

Steve - I came here because one of your fans tipped me off to this video. They had been following the saga of the failed lift bridge in Kingston, Ontario, which has led to the preparation of a Bailey style bridge to replace it temporarily. I enjoyed your account of the bridge on Old Finch and will be sure now to drop by again. Thank you for all you do to keep our understanding of our environment alive

Any idea what the source of this bridge was? The triangular pieces above each transom aren't standard for any of the military versions of the Bailey Bridge.

Apparently after the war Ontario Hydro bought a whole bunch of Bailey bridges and used them as frames for buildings, and I've read that their stock of bridge parts was used for this bridge.

I went to combat engineer school at Fort Leonard Wood, in 1995. They thought us how to build a Bailey Bridge. It’s not too fun when you have to move one of those panels, with six soldiers. A crane definitely makes things a lot easier.

In 1958 we were living in West Hill while my mother was expecting my sister. We attended regular appointments at Scarborough General Hospital. We made the trip in an old Austin that had a crank start. We must have driven along what is now Lawrence Avenue. At one point, probably West Highland Creek, the dirt road descended a steep ravine. Inevitably, while ascending up, out of the ravine the car would stall. Since the battery was usually dead, my father would jump out of the car and stick a rock that he kept in the back seat, behind the rear wheel and proceed to crank start the car, in neutral of course. It was a terrifying experience for me, my brother and mother, all of us expecting the car to go racing backwards into the ravine. As I remember, that was also a Bailey Bridge.

While I'm guessing this was looked into and dismissed as impractical, I am left to wonder about the possibility of using the elevated SRT tracks for some other RT system, possibly even replacing the tracks with Toronto gauge. It would seem to be a preferable option to keep people moving while the Ontario Line is built.
@notsmoothsteve

There had been talk about possibly doing that since long before the RT came crashing to a halt. As always with transit in Toronto, politics and money get in the way.

There's a lovely set of rapids on the Rouge from the Sewell's Rd bridge to the parking lot south of the bailey bridge. The S-bend of the river gives you a nice set of rapids and a short hike back to your car. Whitewater skills are mandatory.

FWIW: The Indian Line Road bridge, out by Claireville Dam, had a Bailey Bridge over it for nearly 20 years ~1963 to ~1983 … before the 427 swooped in … it was goofy, it was noisy, it slowed things down … but I kinda miss it 🤔

There is another Bailey bridge crossing a stream feeding the Humber River in Vaughan, right between Hwy 407 and the CN rail bridge also crossing the Humber river. This one is accessible only to city maintenance vehicles as well as cyclists and hikers, as it is part of an accessible trail in that valley area. It can also be seen from the eastbound 407 and Google maps (from the far right lane).
@stephensaines7100
@stephensaines7100 4 күн бұрын
Confirmed! I've just been studying the Google map of the area, and that trail crossing it connects with the East Humber Recreational Trail. I never knew that existed up into Vaughan. I cycled past the connection to the Humber Trail just a few hours ago. I thought that leg ended at Steeles. Evidently not!
@chirsd666
@chirsd666 4 күн бұрын
@@stephensaines7100 This trail actually connects the Humber River Recreational Trail to Woodbridge. Going north from the HRRT, after crossing under Steeles, along the east edge of Thackeray Park, then under the large CN Rail bridge and over the old Bailey Bridge, follow the main trail north under the 407. The trail then goes west about 200m before turning north again, under the Hydro corridor and up the hill to the back side of the Veneto Centre, which is at the end of Kipling Ave, which takes you across Hwy 7 into downtown Woodbridge. Recognize the Veneto Centre is a private sports club, so be respectful as you pass through there and you should be fine. The ironic thing is the City of Vaughan and the TRCA have been studying for years the construction of a new recreational trail to connect south to the HRRT, but that will never happen and this already exists. it just needs a small trail bypass around the Veneto Centre and some minor improvements (e.g. a small culvert through a boggy section and some fresh gravel here and there) to make it easier for cyclists and hikers to follow.
