Hi Stacy - I have a question - is it recommend to keep the protein level at 26% and under even after they transition to adult food? Noticed a lot of large breed adult foods have a high protein percentage. Is that normal?
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 14 күн бұрын
Ideally yes, but the phosphorus to calcium ratio is more important to get as close to 1:1 as possible. If you can keep the protein level reasonable then you are good.

Hi! I would start with the bmdca.org breeder referral list for reputable breeders. On the same website there is a list of regional bernese clubs, I would go to their websites and reach out to the clubs for their lit of reputable breeders. I would not look on social media for a breeder, mostly all you will find are scams and terrible backyard breeders.

My girl plays the 'keep away' game with me and looks at me as if to say, "just try to get this from me" and then runs all over the yard with the item... Do you think I need to work on longer sit stay so that I have a chance to retrieve the item? Then give the treat?
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 20 күн бұрын
YES! Building up value by treating (a lot) for these behaviors gives a reason for your dog to do them. Ultimately the game of keep-away is to get you to engage and play with them. You just need to change the rules of the game!

I think you can made good choices about who you get a puppy from, trust me, breeders and pedigrees are not created equal. You really need to do your research to find a breeder who is breeding for health, where you can verify hip, elbow, heart and eye health clearances in Bernergarde.org. I would never buy a puppy from a breeder who have their dog's health clearances listed in Bernergarde. Second, I would plan on weekly obedience classes with a Berner puppy for the first year of life at least. They grow so fast that their brain and bodies are rapidly changing and need to revisit lessons at different stages of development. Happy to answer any questions.

I was under the impression that unless they are matted, you shouldn't cut the 'feathers' of a Bernese dogs paws
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 2 ай бұрын
The feathers are on the back of the legs and the pants are on the back of the rear legs. These areas should not be cut. The the hair on the underside of the paws should be kept trimmed.

Unfortunately my 94# girl jumped out of our booster bath a few months ago and had a very tramatic experience as she was tethered to the front and we weren't able to release her. She actually broke both front legs off the bath in her attempt to escape. Do you think that we will ever be able to get her back into the booster (once we replace the two front legs)? Heer last 2 baths have been back in the tub in the house. She avoided even walking near the booster which was lying in the walkway next to the house. I am devastated that we may have "ruined her" to the bath which she used to love.
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade Ай бұрын
You definitely have an uphill battle. I would let her have a break for a few months from the bath and then start with reintroducing it with high value treats only for the bathtub. Just walking by, then you touching it all while rewarding her. I would start feeding her next to it. Ultimately, you might need to put her in it and just treat, treat, treat and jump out. Rinse and repeat. It will be a process but with positive reinforcement and time she can get there. When you do try to wash her in the bath, you need two people, one to hold her and treat her and one to wash. When I wash any new dog I always have one hand on the dogs collar and body so I can hold them and know what they are doing and one washing, it takes practice!

When we are outside to potty train - she's always putting branches and grass in her mouth and gets aggressive when we take it out of her mouth. She does know "leave it" but wants to keep chewing items. I think she is trying to exercise independence??
