Good little radios, for sure. I gave my FT-817ND to my brother, replaced it with an FT-818.

20 watts and a mobile whip (pretty much) on 80 mtrs, sweet!

The Wolf River setup will get you into a null with a near 1:1 match when it is properly grounded. I was getting my hopes up that it would work with 160m as well, but I will need to build a bigger coil for that.

....you mighta had better luck if you had strung out some radials... it's just a 1/4 wave base loaded vertical, and they're not very efficient at the best of times... or better yet make up; a ferrite Xfrmer matched 1/2 wave for the band you wanted to work...then, no radials needed. I worked Slovenia from the West Coast with my Xeigu G90...next contact was Chile.... 5X8...all on a home made EFHW made of #24 wire on a cable core..cost me maybe $25 ....you'll get tons of USA activation contacts that way. Beleve me...it's all in the efficiency of the antenna VA7AA/Xe1

Interesting enough, I usually bring a few clip-on 30' radials. Left them at home this time 🙄

That’s a lot of weight with that wooden frame

It really isn't too bad. Other videos I saw suggested the use of a metal frame. I will probably redo the frame once I can get my hands on a decent 3D printer.
