Great flute and good video. How can I find plants to make this flute with dimensions for holes sizes and layout?

Hi, I'm not sure of any online resources for this. Our dimensions suit are craft style and are always evolving. Some trial and error, or find an affordable flute to purchase and use as a model for your creativity :)

Great flute! The easiest way to avoid confusion would be to just list the semitones, because these scales have so many names. Traditional maqam like Hijaz are built on quartertones, but it's very common for them to be shifted to their nearest semitones to make it playable on more instruments. This semitone notation is 1312131, so it's actually closer to Shad Araban... or to tie it into western music "Hungarian Gypsy Persian Scale" kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKfbd3x3e76HoLM It's also used in Flamenco, Jewish music, Egyptian music.. I think the distinct sound has to do with the symmetry of the scale going up and down. Also, the triad is just a major chord, as unlikely as it would seem. A unique balance of tension and resolution.

My ears hear G Ab B C D Eb F# G, so Makam Shehnaz, not Hijaz, which would have F natural. Anyway a beautiful instrument which sounds superb.

Hi there. Are you able to provide some references for the scales you are talking about so I can compare with what we use please?

@@robabnawaz thanks for the link. We have pretty good scale references we use, and this flute is tuned to a typical Hijaz scale. What I did find though, is that there are several different types of a 'hijaz' scale. Thanks for getting in touch :)

@@brucemcnaught1451 I did not want to critizise your work, the flute is great, but the "normal" hijaz has natural 7th, not sharp 7th degree. At least in middle eastern use. Maybe there is a "gipsy hijaz" with the 7th sharp in Balkan.

Hi, that could be many styles of flute :( Perhaps a Shakuhachi from Japan? They are a rim blown flute. But, often it comes down to how you play the flute, thus you can create a similar tonal quality from our flutes.

What's the diameter of the biggest finger holes on the grandfather flutes? I own a large flute from another maker and have some problems covering the holes with my fingers since I have smaller hands. It would be interesting to compare this one to mine :)

Hi Bella, The diameter of the largest hole is 1cm (.4"). We can craft a flute with smaller holes and with the holes laid out to fit your finger spacing :) Please email me via my website if you can www.southerncrossflutes.com Warmly Todd
