Muchas gracias!

Very bizarre and misleading of Zander to characterize Elgar's Cello Concerto as his "farewell to life." When Elgar completed it in 1919, he still had 15 years to live. If it was a farewell to anything, it was to the life and world he and everyone else had known before World War One. It's a sort of lamentation on the destruction of that pre-war world, and a requiem for the war dead. Elgar composed it at a home in the south of England, from where on some nights during the war he could hear the artillery blasts across the Channel on the Western Front.
