Engaging the detector still compresses the low end, it simply isnt triggered BY the low end. So its ignoring whats below the HP and only reacting to bits that are over the threshold AND the HP filter - but when it compresses it sill compresses the whole thing.

Thank you so much for doing this kind of stuff super appreciate you giving back to little guys. Something I would add to this is the beauty of placing mics at a 45 degree angle which seems to be taught much less days but for recording Strat and like Fender amps it’s kind of must because it takes out that gnarly upper mids thing that is a pain in the rear to eq out where like your g string is like super loud and annoying…
@JacquireKing5 күн бұрын
Thank you for the kind words. I have occasionally use that technique, but it has inherent problems that I don’t love so my solution often is to just find other mics and other placements. There are 1000 plus ways to record and at the end of the day, they are all valid if it gets the emotional part of the music conveyed. Best wishes and share the channel with others. 👊

This is a little modified from Glynn’s original pattern which would have placed the mic over the drummer’s head directly over the snare drum then the second condenser pointed at the snare drum the exact same distance from the snare as a side fill mic the point being to keep them in phase. This mic setup is kind of like a combination of Glynn Johns and the head mic technique used often in the old blues studios
@JacquireKing5 күн бұрын
Yes it is modified
@Graceandpeaceband5 күн бұрын
I actually love the placement you have with the modification of turning that mic around putting right next to the drummer’s head like as close as you can and keeping it comfortable. To my ears the capture of the back of the kit is more of the natural sound most drummers like then give yourself some options by putting a close mic on the snare and kick and then capturing the front of the kit with distanced room mic two to three depending on the size of the room. But to me if I only get one or two mics I want to hear the back of the kit and then some type of kick mic… and for older school tones a 58 or like a audix sounds killer because it stays in the same pallet as the over heads… also for these types of drum tones 57’s as overhead are cool too because again you are trying achieve warmth not necessarily super detailed accuracy. A lot of the old equipment mics and what not sound great because of the frequencies they don’t capture 😊
@Graceandpeaceband5 күн бұрын
I know you have a lot more experience than I do but every test I have done when recording really with any mic that sound of the back of the kit and what drummer hears when they play just to me always sounds so good and the mix is really reasonable as far volumes especially if your drummer has good dynamics
@Graceandpeaceband5 күн бұрын
There are also some amazing videos with Andy Johns who gets less talk but arguably recorded more records and to hear him talk about it is really very funny zero science approach just go in move the mics around until it sounds like the kit choose a kick mic that sounds good then if necessary put a little “cheese” on the snare as he would say… meaning reverb but so funny.. these amazing records we all love try and emulate were just that man’s ears 😊
@Graceandpeaceband5 күн бұрын
Your Kings of Leon drum tones are some of my favorite tones ever. Especially in the context of that music. The bass guitar tones are very good too. To me come around sundown is almost like an ambient rock record. That rhythm section captured in that way with warm depth and saturation is so cool. Really inspiring as an engineer and music lover
@asdfasdf9175 күн бұрын
On Reddits audio engineering subreddit there’s a discussion about what exactly you’re trying to achieve by recording the kick and snare at 0 and the bass at -6. With your kick and snare, is it about the clipping of your converters, or do you think it sounds better because you can hit your pres harder and you think your converters sound better at 0 for kick and snare (so the clipping is more like the side effect and not the main effect you’re trying to achieve). Same with the bass or the room mics: do you believe that the bass/mics sound different if you hit the converters at different volumes? Could you clarify that? Thanks a lot!!!
@JacquireKing5 күн бұрын
It’s not about the sound of clipping that I’m after. I’m just trying to optimize the tonality and impact in the game staging

Love the GJ miking. 🤘🏻 What do you prefer in terms of distance/phase? All 3 equidistant from snare, or kick drum 1.5x the distance, or kick drum anything goes?
@JacquireKing7 күн бұрын
It’s more about the overheads for me. I put the kick mic where I feel like I need or want it for a particular sound.
@KamilDeKerel6 күн бұрын
imo kick drum I think anything goes, you'll normally wont run into phasing as you easily can use an eq if you have a lot of low end bleed on your OH's, another thing is use a good dynamic mic so it soley records the kick with minimal bleed, you can easily realign the phase if the overheads are phasing with the high end due to the minimal bleed in the kick mic, which you also could Low pass a bit if the bleed is phasing in the high ends imo for the kick mic the 3:1 rule or other recording rules aren't as applicable, as there's less problems with phase issues with kicks in general
@JacquireKing6 күн бұрын
Agree with everything here except manipulating phase unless absolutely necessary. Thanks! 👊

When you say, the meters are placed "post stereo mix process" you mean you put the meters after all mix and/or master bus processing. Does that include a limiter? And what are those VU meters calibrated to? -18 dB? In this clip, it looks like they're calibrated to -18 dB, but I don't know why it says -6 dB under the left VU meter.
@JacquireKing8 күн бұрын
Yes, after all my mix buss processing. It looks like the level is set to -9. The reason for this is that I am just looking to reference the level in a usable range for the relative balances.. it’s on the mix bus so the volume will be much greater than a calibration setting of -18. Hope that helps.

This is really sick advice especially what you said about overs. Today I was listening to some virtual riot and there was this one section where a lot of elements were playing at once but the strong beats were being emphasized by some laser foley that was really cutting through the mix. I played it a few times trying to figure out what he was doing to make the foley so loud. Then I realized he wasn’t actually doing anything. The foley was just clipping the master but it didn’t even really matter cause they were basically just transients with no body. Do you ever do this? Do you sometimes let the transients clip so they cut through the mix especially if your trying to emphasize something like a snare?
@JacquireKing8 күн бұрын
Your discovery example is a very specific and extreme example but yes, I am always considering how I’m treating and supporting transient elements. Digital clipping is part of modern music and a useful tool if done with knowledge 👊
