I would think that dropping the main sail could be done easier when you're still away from the Marina or your docking area

I recently re-ran the 3rd reef on a Seawind 1260 catamaran in the north Pacific. The boom was entirely enclosed. I've had a lot of experience snaking electrical wires (and working with guys who did it a lot more than I did.) Getting that 3rd reef sheet through the boom was one of the trickiest repairs we did. Step 1. Sew a messenger line onto reef two. (I brought along paracord) Pull this through the boom. Now you have to get this messenger line over to the sheaves for reef three. There was almost no access. (the guys in this video have it much easier). Step 2. Take a piece of wire (I used a piece of a Vietnamese aluminum hanger.) make a slight hook in the end, leave the edges sharp. This will help you snag the line. At least one of the two 'grabs' wasn't a hook, it was this rough edge snagging. Step 3: Fiddle around in front of the sheave to snag the messenger line and pull it over from the second reef run and out of the boom. This was very tricky. At the mast was a lot harder. Step 4: now you have the messenger line out of the boom but it's on the wrong side of the sheave. Tape it to the sheave and carefully rotate the sheave until the messenger line rolls under and comes up the back. (Make sure to keep some slack out so if it falls off the sheave you don't have to poke around again.) We used duct tape for the aft sheave, but that didn't work for the sheave by the mast. Black double stick tape however worked great. I can fix almost anything but after I'd poke and snagged the messenger line out of both ends of the boom I wasn't sure I could do it again. Tip: get some really good paracord, put it in a baggie and label it Messenger Cord Do Not Cut. Have at least 50 meters (150 feet) of good paracord onboard. Including the 15 meters I used as a messenger line , we used at least 100' (33 m) during three months and 7000 nm of sailing. No one else thought we needed any. (Get the best easiest to use and most reliable butane burner you can find. We couldn't find a good one in Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan or even Japan. Make sure it's easy to refill. ) Another tip: When you take delivery of a new boat, have someone who's sailed that company's boat for either a long crossing or a few years. They aren't going to say 'wow, what a great boat.' They know it's a great boat, but they're going to demand that all the rigging mistakes and chaffing that is going to happen be fixed before you take delivery. (My boat is older and really well fitted out and I think I've proved I know a thing or two -- but I had no clue.) Hope this helps. Fair winds and carry a marlin spike.

Al these commenters acting like hearing through the wind noise is some insurmountable struggle. If listening through wind sitting around watching 2 min of video just destroys your mental status you are to fragile for the sea anyway.

BST - Basic Sail Training Recent Naval Academy Graduates that stay at the school to teach the new incoming Plebes during the summer. Graduation is now is in late May and the new Ensigns stay at least till end of Plebe summer when academic year starts

It is a job that has to be done but also there are not enough schools to take all the Nrotc and Naval Academy grads coming out at summer graduation so Most people get “stashed “ while waiting for schools.

Great video. Exactly how it's done on many boats. Position of the knot should be right where the reefing grommet lines up with the boom.

It's generally preferred to not have a knot rubbing on an edge. Dress your loop differently and it solves this.
