Wow great uogrades! What was your budget for all this? Did you reoplace the caulking because it was faulty? Did you install the seat over the davits too?
@alwayssummerrochambeau3 ай бұрын
Budget?! What budget?! That got blown a long time ago. 🤑 We put in about $100K this year, which is very anomalous. But it was either that or spend even more buying a newer and bigger boat. So either way we win. The caulking started to look dirty and one window had a very small amount of play. So we just decided to be proactive and rebed the windows. Yes! We had a custom stainless steel and teak bench made to fit between the davits. Added the custom cushion and tada! A whole new seating area since we spend most of our time entertaining off the back cockpit.

Really nice job. I like the way you built it from aluminium profiles and with a simple tool set available onboard. I am looking at a similar approach for our Lagoon 39. Could you share the dimensions of the 2 pieces connecting to the compression tubes of the bimini roof?

What are the length and width of your solar panels, and do you think it would be ok if they were longer? I’m planning the solar arch for our 400 and trying to decide which panels to go with. Thank you.
@alwayssummerrochambeau2 жыл бұрын
Ours are 39” wide, and 65” long. Longer would have you end up in the commercial grade panels which are bigger and heavier.

Curious if there is any limit on how much canvas you hoist. I notice that America's Cup and such boats, such as the exalted Volvo Ocean Racers, throw up so much canvas that they leave very little power in the wind wasted. It's always part of the fun to watch these sailing heavyweights hoist so many acres of canvas!

Hello Thank you for this video it was great content! I'm booked to go in August, but may I ask how you two felt about the trip with Covid? I mostly ask because we have friends telling us costa rica is a "stay away" zone according to CDC, buuutttt we feel it may be safe enough to travel still. Also how long ago did you two go there? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Very cool. I plan on doing the same radar with wifi. Glad to see it work. Why did you leave the radar dome at the level of the first spreader? Weight at the masttop should not be a problem with this lightweight dome. You could see further. Would masttop movement be a limiting factor? Is the radar affected by the jib in front (when its wet)?
@alwayssummerrochambeau3 жыл бұрын
Higher would be nicer, for sure. I still prefer the original location and not to drill new mounting holes in the mast and weaken its structure.

Hi guys, sorry have been working. But this whole virus situation gives us some time to think about our boat and it’s awesome comfort and features whilst being in isolation in Mammoth. Our solar system has been working quite well. Certainly for 2 people more than sufficient. We never hit the 1000 Watts exact, but darn close. We did add a wind turbine to add power when sailing or relaxing in more cloudy or dark conditions. We will probably add some more solar to compensate for our additional freezer and fridge. Will probably make a video of that installation too. It will be 2x 150W flex panels on top of our helm station with another VictronConnect MPPT charge controller.

@alwayssummerrochambeau5 жыл бұрын
Emilengelbrecht Thank you for your observations and thank you for watching our video. True wind was approx 12 knots, hence the little white caps. Boat speed was 6 knots. Therefore apparent wind is 12-6= 6 knots.

I am using the davit winch to keep the deck more organized. This way you don’t have to run the halyard to the helm which creates a trip hazard. No MOBs on my watch.
@richarddoherty8426 жыл бұрын
You use the davit winch for the port side gennakker sheet! That's a pretty interesting idea. Also, I was looking forward to seeing how to put it away single-handed.
@alwayssummerrochambeau6 жыл бұрын
Richard Doherty He didn’t put it away single-handed. That’s why I was there and a couple parts of the video are missing. 😉

Great work. Can I ask why did you not wire the solar chargers to the far side of the shunt, so you get the power measurement from the shunt?
@alwayssummerrochambeau6 жыл бұрын
Richard Doherty What is the shunt? (Sorry, English is my husband’s 3rd language. He’s unsure of what you mean.)
@alwayssummerrochambeau6 жыл бұрын
I am sorry, I don’t understand your question or understand what the difference would be in performance or measurement. What would have been your interpretation of a better scenario? Please note that besides the shunt on the far end I also have a breaker installed primary to the solar charge controller.
@richarddoherty8426 жыл бұрын
If the solar attachment was on the other side of the shunt (not the battery side), then your general boat power monitor would include the input from the solar panels. Without using the shunt, the power meter includes the usage but ignores the input from the solar panels. I know you have a separate monitor for the solar panels, so you know what;s going on, but the general boat monitor would show a less useful number, I suspect. Just curious, this isn't any kind of design flaw, just a choice about what your power monitor reports.
@alwayssummerrochambeau6 жыл бұрын
Hi, sorry for misunderstanding your question initially. Your comment and therefore suggestion makes sense. I simply did not consider it as I was solely relying on the data obtained from the app provided with the solar chargers. The current power monitor on the boat is very limited in its capability to show the input of various charging resources. I am aware of reliable aftermarket systems that provide this flexibility. Consider it a Part 3 of the saga. I am sure improvements can be made and suggestions are always welcome.
