Invaluable episode content for everyone searching for a really effective and fun way to develop improvisational skills - I have been experimenting the same way for some time now and it keeps me going inquisitively - I wished I had had the opportunity to listen to such helpful content a long time ago - however - to explore and experiment having some kind of frame, form, rule to avoid meaningless chaos is in my opinion THE way to successfully develop skills while having fun like an exploring child - I ❤ this podcast because it is outstandingly balanced with professional information, analysis and practice advice (on chord-scale relationships, song form, chord progressions, Jazz Standard Repertoire, history, musicians, funny but meaningful anecdotes etc.) What more can you ask for?😊❤

Do you think playing just the root motion (C - C - D - D and so on ) of the chords is also a good thing to do or do you consider it superfluous - thanks for answering in advance

I read the advice somewhere to listen to classic Jazz singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, etc. for a more "straight" rendition of the tune's melody

I really agree with the fact that it really helps to have some kind of a springboard to kick off the creative process - e.g. like in a song a "theme or head" where you come back to (repetition), an "anchor point" - in order to be creative in a meaningful way, some kind of form or structure is needed (Blues form, II-V-I, Turnaround Progressions or simply just a chord and the standard chordscale from its mode for the IN sound and one that is more exotic, defined by wider intervals, half steps, alterations for a more OUT sound - and then switching back and forth between both in "sidestepping/sideslipping" fashion - this is a lot of fun to do and very effective to get a feel for all degrees of tension and resolution

You're 100% spot on! Remember, creativity comes from a lack of resources, not an abundance! So, the more "self-imposed constraints," the better! For example, improvise using ONE chord and ONLY the ROOT, 3rd, 5th, and 7th of that sound. Do even FEWER chord tones to spawn more creativity! If you can't produce music with limited resources, adding more will not help! Thanks, as always, for your insight and comments!

Great content - I'm not a piano player but the content, didactics and method are great for learning or review Jazz language no matter what instrument - and of course there's no better instrument than a piano to demonstrate and convey harmonic and melodic concepts. ❤

I love that as a non-pianist you are diving into these episodes! You are correct, the piano is the best jazz "chalkboard" we have - if you can see jazz concepts through the lens of the keyboard you will be much more successful with the application of the concepts to your own instrument. Congrats to you!

What most amazes me about your podcast concept is your guidance for people who are unsure what is really indispensable for developing as a (Jazz-)musician - the advice you give very clearly and understandable eliminates any kind of doubts about "what should I focus on to make sure to spend my time effectively" your advice not to rush is priceless and I can say for myself that I just lately discovered the versatility and "hipness" of triads superimposed to get interesting sounds and colors in addition to the regular chordscales and other interesting superimposed scales to be played from various scale degress - it is worth in my opinion to really LISTEN to all degrees of color up to the almost unbearable tension to get a feel for the nuances and ways to go in and out the underlying harmony - training your ears this way will make you play the most out sounds with confidence - what an inexperienced player can't do when he or she will accidently play those notes and therefore it will sound "wrong" - and of course "rhythm is king"

Thank you. My musical journey is rich and deep. I come from an eclectic style. I play Eddie hazel style guitar, I make beats, I DJ parties. I am a graphic designer and a community creator in my city organizing forward thinking collective events. It’s people Just like you that allow me to live such a meaningful life full of growth and inspiration. I’d only heard of Lester Young. I am excited to see all of your videos. Thank you for enlightening myself and many others.
