Hi intensive MD ,my mother who is 80 years old developed PE on second day after major abdominal surgery and she developed all the typical symptoms of pulmonary embolism such as difficulty breathing increase breathing rate increased heart rate ,chest pain ,slightly increased body temperature ,low saturation of oxygen and then when her abdominal surgeon asked doctors from the ICU to take her to the ICU because she was in danger they refused to accept her like they couldn't help her, there is no need to go to the ICU and so on later I found out that they do not accept older patients with inoperable tumor( even though after surgery her surgeon told me that she could potentialy live 2 or 3 more years) . They just gave her anticoagulant therapy and oxygen. She died couple of hours later because of cardio respiratory insufficiency. Thats inhumane and discriminatory!!!

My dad was taken off of life support on 12/26/16. The neurologist told us it would be a matter of minutes...He had other plans. He was moved to the ortho ward and past 3 days later. His one wish was for all his grandchildren to be home for the holidays. The last grandchildren flight arrived at 9:30, he passed at 11:00!

When discussing dnr wth other family members... WHY.?? are experienced hospital staff telling the family..."if we need to do cpr, we will break their ribs and we will puncture their lungs and they will end up on a ventilator, is that what you want"...... serious questions need tobe answered by nhs operatives in the uk.

If someone has a DNR / DNI let them be. You are saying that you are offering things they don't want.

I had extensive CVST a year and half ago cause of birth control pills. My last MRI showed no clots but I still experience some tingling sensation in my right side of the body especially when it's cold. Will it be there forever or get better with time?

thanks so much!! My 62 yo brother is awaiting a liver transplant for 4th stage liver failure with alcoholic cirrhosis. He didn't think he had a drinking problem and as soon as he heard his AST/ALT levels he hasn't touched a drop. Could. this be a genetic weakness?

I came here bc we lost our son to a brain aneurysm. I can't remember parts of the day including when the doctors showed us his brain scan. I'm told i was there and i remember parts of that day but i can't remember that snippet of the day. Probably a good thing it's blocked. I feel better knowing how much goes into the accurate confirmation of brain death. Doesn't bring my son back but i know there was no shadow of a doubt.

I am undergoing evaluation for liver transplant and a lot are rejected. I might be rejected because I have past surgeries for hernias with wire mesh, a right hemicolectomy as well as having a big clot blocking my portal vein. Calcium throughout my heart and veins near my spleen. I have a 895 calcium score around my heart. Be straight up with me, they are probably not going to accept me for transplant. It's a shame because I like being alive?

I have early onset of asymptomatic COPD. I also have 90% plaque in right subclavian artery. I have been referred to a cardiovascular thoracic surgeon. They want to put me on a ventilator. This terrifies me because I feel you check in and don't check out. I'm worried about complications ventilators can cause. Are there different types of ventilators? It may not be the same as what I'm thinking. Could you clarify my concerns so I'll know what questions to ask.

Could have a painful terminal illness where they suffer, they don’t just want to end life but if by chance they can go early they’d rather that than continue on, it’s truly sad but living in constant agony is something no one deserves and although I can say I’d never want a DNR I definitely can understand why some people do

I would like to see all airports across the US build a doctors' office inside of the airport. Sometimes, these medical emergencies are unpredictable but sometimes they aren't and the airline staff (who aren't medical professionals) are not always able to reason with these passengers and their families as to why they shouldn't board the plane due to their medical conditions. Often times, these people who are unreasonable end up having an emergency medical problem on the plane and it disrupts not only the passenger in critical condition but the other passengers as well.

My mom ended up in a vegetative state and on life support a few months ago, I noticed tears falling from her eyes only after the decision to take her off life support was made. Even though the chance was slim I still feel like if she was given more time she would’ve pulled through. She was a fighter like no other, and she continued fighting for over half an hour after being taken off life support. She didn’t take her final breath until I told her it was ok, that she didn’t have to suffer anymore, and that I loved her. One final tear fell down her face as she took her final breath. People have recovered from her exact scenario but she would’ve needed more time. I know it’s selfish but I begged for her to be monitored for one more day. I wanted to wait until she had no brain activity or until her heart stopped on its own, so I would at least have the comfort of knowing that there wasn’t a chance of recovery. I knew her better than anyone and she always told me that, and I know damn well she wasn’t ready to go that day, she wanted to keep fighting, and my god did she try. I just turned 17 this month, my dad passed away when I was 10.

Although his family never said what his cause of death was, an ex of mine began acting very confused and angry on Facebook. He had posted that he needed a liver transplant, and that he’d lost a severe amount of weight. Also said he’d had problems walking. Later photos revealed a dramatic change in appearance too. He looked like he’d aged 50 years. He’d been a heavy drinker when I was with him so I can only assume he had cirrhosis caused by alcoholism. He’d written to me shortly before he died, claiming he’d come all the way to Hawaii to see me and was buying a house here. Never saw him because he Stayed two nights and left, or so he claimed. It seemed so far fetched I was forced to conclude that he was experiencing severe confusion from his liver disease. RIP, it was probably an awful way to go.

'Medical' 'doctors ' and hospitals are all about the $$$$$$$$ , don't be so naive- it's all a business. Medical mistakes are one of the leading causes of death , it's OK if you drank their Kool Aid, you'll realize you're wrong one day . Have a blessed day.

My mom got ARDS last year after blood transfusions. She was in the ICU for 3 weeks and she survived. Her lungs are damaged and she uses oxygen at home, but sometimes she forgets to use the oxygen and her Spo2 goes down to 73% which is too low. A year later she is now back in the ICU because of aspiration pneumonia. She is 80 years old, and she was a heavy smoker for many many years although she has not smoked in the last year. Have you seen ARDS in the same patient twice?

My sister lost her life , after 2 nights in the icu. Her husband knew she was pro life. At 54, she left behind a 16 yr old son. He raced against tine, so she wont be able to wake up. He was coerced by his family. My sister is none deserving of tgeir precious son that works at bae. I honestly did not see this coming. She tokd me of the evil women trying to get rid of her, not their, not their own kind. I know tge tgreats they played with her. Manipulative bs shots within 28 yrs. They think no big deal but i know why after 2 days, her husband signed dnr and dni. His compliance to his family. I call it murder!!!
