Alright...somehow this is still getting comments after six months, so let me drop a little clarification here. I did not realize how divisive this opinion would be, or how many rabid fans there still were of this twenty year old show. That's not to say I wouldn't have posted this short if I did know. What most commenters here seem not to have realized is that I like the show too - I wouldn't bother voicing my complaints about a show I don't care about. KZbin has auto-blocked several comments for abuse, but I've unblocked all of them, cause I don't believe in censorship, even if the thing being censored is stupid or unproductive. I also genuinely want to hear counter arguments to every point I make on this channel. It's called Rico Talks, not Rico Is Always Right. But please, before you comment, ask yourself if what you're about to say is actually productive or intelligent in any sense of either word. And if you're one of the many Titus Pullo fanboys who have sprung up out of the weeds to hurl insults at this short, ask yourself if I acrually said anything at all negative about the characters, or if i was just pointing out that one farfetched aspect of a multi-storyline series was a little hard to take seriously due to its improbability in an otherwise grounded narrative. inb4 🤓

As someone who grew up with the 1993 film and therefore, possesses an unbreakable nostalgic attachment… is it bad I would have preferred a sequel to the 1993 disasterpiece over the generic 2023 reboot?

No one trusts Hollywood writers nowadays, they’re just not talented enough to adapt it. The 1980’s writers weren’t talented either but the film decided it was going to be style over substance.

L take. The characters make the show, and give history meaning. This isn’t a documentary, it’s a drama. Caesar, Octavian, Pompey, and Antony are all truly larger than life figures. Their interactions with Titus and Lucius make them actual people. Humanizes them, brings them out of myth.
@ricotalks16 күн бұрын
Yes. I agree. But that doesn't mean those two (2) characters had to be at the center of every major historical event.

My dream usually depicts a new wave of Bionicles in modern day, remakes of old 2001-2003 sets using current building techniques! They’re never as good as the OG sets though, and my dream self always recognizes this and is filled with sadness lol

How do you follow such historical events and have a connection to them. You ‘create’ fictional’ characters involved in them so you’re personally invested. Like Vikings. Rollo and Ragnar weren’t brothers
@ricotalksАй бұрын
Oh yeah, I get switching things up for the sake of entertainment value, like what they did to Atia (who was known for being conservative and chaste), I just didn't like how they had the same two fictional characters cause so many major events
@spartanrh83Ай бұрын
I know exactly what you’re saying, I asked myself if they detracted from the history, but then again I loved the characters and the way they were written. In the end it was an HBO show and it needed some comedy and a side story to engage folks that might not be into history like I am.
@ricotalksАй бұрын
Exactly. I get it, I just think making them SO accidentally important was too over the top.
@spartanrh83Ай бұрын
@@ricotalks That’s a fair observation but you’re not considering how heavy this material is for some people. It’s a common literary device when dealing with this subject matter to use a character or two to engage with and follow through the history. Black Sails was like that, Marco Polo, Shogun. I think the real problem you have with them is the same as mine. That time period in Rome doesn’t need any help, the real life characters and history is so authentically rich that they could have just told the real story and I would have been completely engaged. The problem is that we live in a time where there are 11 Fast and Furious movies and they have all made money. We have no soul bro. America is a whore, like right out of Revelation, the state teaches our children to not look into anything deeper than the superficial. America took this page right out of Romes playbook when dealing with the plebs, from that perspective Vorenus and Pullo the way they are written are very much part of the story even if the characters are fiction. Caesarion walking off with Pullo at the end was not history. And I hated it and loved it. Just like real life
@ricotalksАй бұрын
Well said. The commenters who think I was too harsh on Rome should be glad I didn't make a short about Black Sails tbh

In regards to the story changing from telling to telling, I've never seen something brought up. Back in the 90s when I went to meet Douglas Adams at a book store promotional tour for "Starship Titanic", someone asked him why it was different form telling to telling. His answer was basically "How boring would that be? You've already heard that story." It seemed that he liked changing it up each time so that there was always something new to learn about the story and the characters. While I am finding out that people didn't take well to the movie because it was not exactly the book, I never had a problem with the changes Adams made in the movie because it just seemed to be part of the way HHGTTG is. I did think you missed some things in the movie however if you never read the book. Likewise, I may have missed something because at the time I saw it I had never listened to the radio show. I may have to watch it again soon.

"Should Hitchhiker's Guide be franchised out into a larger universe of overlapping stories written by multiple authors?" Nope, it wasn't written that way, and the original author is no longer with us. Anything written in said universe after Douglas' demise is nothing more than fanfiction to me. However, there's a series of books where a somewhat similar approach is something I'd really love to see: Stephen King's "The Dark Tower". Stop reading here if you haven't finished the series yet, as I'm going to SPOIL THE END, and by extension, the entire series. You've been warned. Still here? OK, here goes: at the end of the series, we learn that this isn't the first time Roland makes the trip. In Groundhog Day fashion, his progress gets reset after finishing his quest "incorrectly", and some alterations are made to aid him in the next cycle. E.g. after this loop, everything is the same as before, except he still has the Horn of Eld. The story ends where it began. And this is a perfect opportunity to hand it over to a new writer who King trusts to, first and foremost, do the story and the themes justice. And second, to appoint another writer to take over after he's finished with the story, who he trusts to also do these same two things. The Dark Tower could be a series passed on from writer to writer, each adding their own personal style and insights, and each linking it to the rest of their own works perhaps.
@ricotalksАй бұрын
I would LOVE to see a TV adaptation of the dark tower, possibly set in the next loop (as the movie claimed to be). Idk if you'd be interested in this but I'm planning on doing a series on my other channel where I plot out TV shows I wish would be made, and the dark tower is one of the ones I plan on doing soon
@EvenTheDogAgreesАй бұрын
@@ricotalks Yeah, if they're going to film it, it would make more sense as a series. Possibly an animated one, since filming would take so long that your actors (especially Jake's actor) would visibly age. And if they must go with a movie instead, treat it like the new Dune movies: commit to telling the whole story, spread over multiple movies. I'm not fond of the idea of doing different loops in movie/series format before that becomes an established thing with the books though. There's no good way to convey the idea that it's a different loop, and it would just look like any other book adaptation that fails to follow the source material. In a book, this can be addressed in the foreword, and you can safely assume your readers will have read the original books. In a movie, you could have the narration (either narrator or on-screen text) explain it at the beginning, but most of your audience will be unfamiliar with the source material and feel like you just spoiled their ending. At least, that's how I feel about it. I'll check out your other channel. Thanks.

I enjoyed 'And Another Thing...' but the idea that HHG is only genuine HHG if it's written by DNA himself is exactly the kind of fetishisation that drove DNA away from the series in the first place. There were 18 episodes of 'Dirk Gently' and I don't see many people moaning about whether 16 of them shouldn't exist because they weren't written by DNA himself.
