Sublime. These horses have the advantage because they use a crupper, a balancing tool for the horse. Nice horse, attentive, relaxed, light in hand, just gets on with it.

Only the Portuguese! You wanna know why? They always use a crupper. They know, as I do, that the horse with a snug-fit crupper has an advantage. They use their whole spine and tail to balance and carry a rider. And hey, they surely do scuttle downhill much more confidently. The crupper is a tool for the horse. Just make sure you use it from the very start.

@@skyethewylder Thank you. I am old school, in Australia. Back in the late 70's, an old Snowy River stockman told me, when I started breeding horses (Snowy Mountains ponies bred of legends) to keep the crupper on them. He never said why, but I found out. Most folks even then had almost forgotten it existed. Not only does the saddle not interfere with the shoulder blades, a horse only has to tuck his rump a bit to grab onto the weight, easier stopping.

@@louisecassidy5991 about 20 years ago, I was training my Arabians for endurance, as short lived terrible idea, not for me, but saddle fit is a HUGE topic. And I remember some people using cruppers. But I've never had a good explanation until your post. It makes sense. The absolute beauty of movement of the horse in this video certainly makes a good case for them. Getting ready for a horse, after 20 years of not having one. I have some really rough, ruggged classic New Mexico territory to ride in, and I can see clearly a crupper is going to be on my tack wish list. All the ups and downs etc. Anyways, it makes sense to me what you said. As an athlete myself, I get it, being able to engage the body. An analogy that comes to ming is carrying a toddler on your back. You have to adjust for their movements and wiggling around, but if you had one of those toddler shelf thingys I see parent's use nowadays to carry them around on their backs, there is less worry of shifting them off and you can move naturally. Now I am going down the contemplative path of just how much a horse will adjust to a rider, even unbeknownst to the rider, and if you can make that saddle and rider a little more secure, you can move around naturally. It really shows on this horse. Fun things to consider! I would dearly love an Iberian horse, but most likely, am going to go for the gold standard around here, a good ranch quarter horse. Too old nowadays for the shenanigans of the Arabians of my youth. Lol

@@skyethewylder In America is Australian Saddle Company. Will take a crupper, stuffed with horsehair and lined with wool serge. I rode in one 30 yrs ago, was better than my own RM Williams campdrafter. The beauty of a traditional Aussie stock saddle is that it will fit absolutely any horse, wide or narrow. Be careful if you haven't ridden for years. My horses I'd bred in the 80's all died out, and I was an expert, old school, before all this natural horsemanship. Now 76yo my sticking muscles do not serve me at all and have had 2 falls off horses I probably should not have been on. Ok on a good one, gotta stay off the youngsters. You can buy a double saddle for kids to ride behind, American style, would not fit every horse. How much a horse will adjust to a rider? You gotta adjust to the horse. Bear in mind they can get very fucked up changing hands. Get his own bridle if you can - I used to make bridles and every 4yo I sold, the bridle went with it. Balance on your feet not your seat, keep a very light hand, and release all pressure the moment you get the right response. See Warwick Schiller (USA) and Steve Young (UK) for the best. Clinics are good but really, you can get tips and tricks but you cannot buy horse sense, and horses know right quick if you got it or not. Crupper has to be included from the very start, very scary and you cannot just put them on any horse, unless you want a buckjump demo!

Just starting a horse on a WE journey and I'm really interested by some of the dressage that goes with it. In this instance, from a standard dressage test, the horse is often crooked, on incorrect flexion and the movements are terribly shaped in this test (circles that nothing like it) - none of that seems to matter......

Uh, this is a little more advance than that as the training is FEI level dressage and takes yrs to physically train for equines to carry themselves in this high collection. There are no sure cuts, this is pretty pure.

It is similar as the basis of both is cattle work. Working Equitation developed from Southern European riding styles in Portugal and Spain als well as France and Italy. This is a good documentation about the German team at World Championship 2014, explaining the different disciplines and how WE started. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5ysqpp8jZd9g5I
