Thanks for this video, some great tips. I hadn't heard of the baking soda one. I got one of these secondhand off eBay recently, it plays very very well and sounds pretty good too. I will probably change the pickups and electronics just for a project, but it is not really necessary. Also, I read in a few places that these 40th anniversary JMs already have an angled pocket, so you don't need to shim.

Did you check the 68000 mfd capacitor what does it read on an ESR meter ? You may be masking another problem like either a bad regulator ic ? Something else could be pulsing ac on a dirty dc supply? Maybe a rectifier? Just a thought ? I have the same amplifier with similar but ,intermittent switching issues? Going to get into it soon !
@6dbthreshold17 күн бұрын
The ESR was around 50ohms if a remember correctly, but I don’t think the cap was loading the rectifier too much. These amps are notorious for switching issues, especially after a retube. If the tube heaters draw just a little too much current, the cap starts to fart out. These amps use +/-3.5vdc to run the heaters. There is a balance pot, R3 that lets you adjust voltage coming off the regulator. Since your problem is intermittent, I would bias the amp first on the cool side, then adjust heater voltage balance and see if your problem goes away. In my case, I replaced the bridge rectifier and all the caps in the power supply since I was into it that far. The voltage regulators tested fine when fed with clean dc.

@@6dbthreshold These are also notorious for a bad bridge I believe 6amp rectifier for the DC heaters also they overheat . Replace with a 25 amp just better heavy duty .

Sold mine. After I got it running again, I played it for 2 weeks and never fell in love with it. I knew it would eventually have to install better tubes and get the dc regulators upgraded. I didn’t like it enough to want to spend more time on it.

Very creative and fun video! I got a B stock one a few years back - I've a vid on my channel - and was quite impressed stock. Raised the pickup with a shim and changed the bridge for a fixed 'lightening' one and it sets up better. The stock bridge on mine looked like it was at the minimum it could be to set a decent action as the saddles are too high and the bridge a little too bulky. Its a very bright guitar acoustically and with the bright P90 (which is quite good tbh!) I found changing the pot to 250k tamed it a bit. A new nut is in order as cut slightly off centre - hence the B stock. Fun guitar to keep around in the studio!

I would have asked for at least 50% off because of the damage

They offered a full refund. But they can’t discount more than 15% on the spot. So I just lived with damage because it is a somewhat rare amp to find used.

@@6dbthreshold I don't understand how the tone studio software can change the volume if it is determined by the potentiometer setting
@6dbthreshold2 ай бұрын
@@channel-fs3tg. I haven’t seen a schematic, but it’s very possible that the panel pots feed inputs to adc converters for the logic processors. Then the processor determines which volume signal to follow (local pots or software). Then a processor output probably feeds a VCA that adjusts volume at the audio power transistors. I don’t really know. But I bet it’s safe to assume the pots adjust control voltage and not audio signals. Still, pure conjecture on my part.

I bought one of these and made a big mistake by trying to adjust the tension rod. By the time I had it tight enough it snapped the truss rod. Does anyone know if I'd be better off buying a new neck or taking it to a Luthier to fix the truss rod. I looked up how to fix the truss rod and have contemplated fixing it that way. Or just buying a new neck and installing it. Does anyone know what kind of neck I should get? There's a few different pocket designs and I don't want to get the wrong one.

I man, i want to modify my amp adding it more gain ,i got a Rivera M100 and Peavey 6505+112 plus combo. Can you give me some advice?
@6dbthreshold2 ай бұрын
More gain? Which amp? The 6505 has too much (more than enough). The Rivera is a nice cleanish fender. Soldano added more gain by adding insane non-symmetrical bias at the third gain stage. Very smooth and creamy. But mushy in comparison to fender circuits. I always recommend playing with overdrive pedals first, before modding an amp. Way too much circuit analysis involved to give a simple answer. Rob Robinette has a great website for simple amp mods. Good luck.

I’ve had the Katana MkII 50, 100 MkII and 100 Artist MkII Combo. IMO the artist sounds and is built much better than the 50 (I’ve had 2) but at a huge weight and size penalty making it a PITA to move, but the Artist clean is loads better than the 50, almost - very nearly almost as good as Fender. The Katana 100 MkII is the “in between” more controls than the 50, less than the Artist? sounds better than the 50, but not as good as the Artist, and a price less than the Artist more than the 50. The other problem is the Artist can get LOUD. That said for the house, I sold both the 50 and 100 and kept the Artist. Sounds amazing and love the controls on the panel. The waza speaker, shaping, cab sim, and solo functions on the artist are on the panel and don’t require using Tone Studio or the xSonic with the mobile app, an are terrific. I wish Boss would add the same controls to the entire line.

More precisely -- those figures are *SUPPOSED TO BE* referenced to a precisely defined lightning-induced power spike with an exponential rise time of 8 *MICROseconds* and a decay time of 20 *MICROseconds.* (That's measured in *MILLIONTHS* of a second.) That said, the > 140,000 amp rating is well in excess of anything realistic, mainly because that much current would never make it to your surge suppressor (short of a *DIRECT STRIKE* on your house). In that case, all bets are off. You probably will have bigger problems than damage to whatever is plugged into this device!

@EleanorPeterson4 ай бұрын
I've seen lots of 'cheap Ricky' bass videos on KZbin, and they all have the same poor quality bridges fitted. On one review of a Chinese model the action was badly off, causing lots of fret buzzing. After much fiddling the reviewer found that the A and D strings were mounted flat, and not set to match the radius of curvature of the fingerboard (I think it worked out at 12"). By raising the A and D string mounts about 1/16" with shims, the action was improved dramatically, and the buzzing disappeared. I suppose the problem with fitting a really good bridge to an instrument like this is that it'd cost more than the guitar. 🤭
