War veterans have always been thought of as expendable by those in government leadership positions. That's the way it's always been throughout history from all histories. What's grossly abhorrent is when civilians share in that behavior.

Sylvester Stallone accidentally broke the nose of Alf Humphreys (Lester) during the jail escape scene by elbowing him in the face, which is why he is seen wearing a band-aid throughout the rest of the film. Coincidentally, this is what Rambo does to a policeman in the novel during the exact same scene.

A plot point that was present in the novel but absent from the film was the primary reason behind Teasle's resentment and contempt toward Rambo, which was that Rambo was a veteran of the Vietnam War, which gained a lot of attention, whereas Teasle was a veteran of the Korean War, which most people had all-but-completely-forgotten at this point in time.

After watching a rough cut of the film, which was about three hours long, Sylvester Stallone and his agent claimed that the film was so bad that it made them sick. Stallone also feared that the film would kill his career, and he attempted to buy all the footage and destroy it. When he couldn't do that, he suggested that the producers cut much of his part and let the rest of the characters tell the story. After heavy edits, the film was cut down to 93 minutes and set a precedent for future action movies.

The large piece of rotten canvas that Rambo finds in the woods and cuts into a makeshift coat was in fact not a movie prop, but a real piece of rotten canvas found by the film crew during the movie's production. Since there was only one piece, Sylvester Stallone joked about how the canvas became a treasured prop on the set. After filming ended, Stallone kept the rotten canvas and still has it in his possession to this very day.

War is hell, and turns men into demons against their will. Don't be fooled by "patriotism", it's all Big Business and geo-political high stake games. "“A patriot must always be ready to defend his country - against his government.” - Edward Abbey(1927-1989)

My father was Portuguese and served in Angola between 1963 and 1967. The Colonial War was very similar to Vietnam, and Angola became known to us as the "Portuguese Vietnam." My father and his lifelong comrades were known by their nicknames: Trinta e Cinco, Júlio, and Saca-rolha. My father was Beto (Corporal Carvalho, cavalry). He had numerous scars on his body, including gunshot wounds, cuts from bladed weapons, and many shrapnel scars on his legs caused by grenades. My old man died of cancer in 2000 after living a life filled with trauma, suffering, and post-war addictions. The war in Angola not only took his youth but also his soul and zest for life. When I was a child, whenever he was drunk, he would open up and tell me about the horrific things he witnessed and faced in those haunting African jungles-hunger, the inhospitable climate, pain, and loss. "Kill or be killed" was all he would say... Rest in peace, Dad. You didn't have a life, but I hope you've found the peace you always dreamed of. ✌️ ---

Thanks for your story, i had never heard it but it explains why Rambo was a success around the world when it came out -- it is a universal story. I am curious, how were the vets treated in Portugal when they returned home?
@LeoZusi10 күн бұрын
@@PresCalvinCoolidge Mr. Coolidge, the veterans of the Colonial War faced significant rejection upon returning to Portugal. After the Carnation Revolution and the fall of the regime, society began to see the war as a colonial mistake, and many Portuguese treated the former soldiers with coldness, misunderstanding, and even hostility, viewing them as symbols of an oppressive past. Much like American Vietnam veterans, they were stigmatized and faced moral accusations. Moreover, many veterans suffered from severe mental health issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but there was little understanding or support for their struggles at the time. The lack of proper psychological care, combined with societal indifference, drove many to drug and alcohol addiction as a way to cope with their trauma. This often resulted in broken family relationships, with many unable to maintain healthy bonds. Countless families were torn apart by these issues, including my own, as the war's legacy continued to inflict pain long after the fighting ended. In addition to their personal suffering, veterans were and still are today associated with Salazar's regime and the atrocities committed during the dictatorship. Although many of them were young men forced to fight for a system they did not believe in, they continue to carry the stigma of being representatives of the old regime. This perception persists, especially among younger and more liberal Portuguese people, who often link the veterans to colonialism, repression, and the policies of the Estado Novo. For many of these veterans, this adds an extra burden, perpetuating rejection and the lack of recognition for the sacrifices and suffering they endured. here is a small sample: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3LJfXmne9OMrdE
