Let me know if you want the booklet with pictures and diagrams of each step. If I can, I'd come back there and help. It looks like I'll be building another one in Honduras as the Lord leads. I looks like Wendy has been baking bread, giving it to my missionary friends, Tim and Jaclyn, who pastor up there, for the purpose of giving it to this guy they visit on their way up to the mountain church. This guy is wheelchair bound. He would like a rocket oven.

interesting, I did mine different with grow beds that I cut the other way with bell siphons I also used chemical barrels and rinsed them out but I think I messed up. I may try building grow beds your way as I originally planned to do them like that just wasn't sure how to drain them. I'll check yours out more.

I'm glad you are building an aquiponics system. It is a good way to conserve water while growing fish and plants. There are many ways to create a system this is just one. I'm glad you are using this design to build it. It is a good one. Of course, there are modifications that can be made in connecting the barrels together and also using a more sound base. This design has the nuts and bolts of having a successful system.

The style of this song is definitely different than the mainstream Christian music, yet if you follow Tauren, you will find that he loves the Lord and His music definitely reflects who Christ is, exalts Him, and loves to lead others into the worship of the Lord. I have posted several other songs he presented that evening that will show case what I was referring to. My channel is www.KZbin.com/@williamwagner. You can click on Playlist and look for Christian artists. My recordings were from a concert at Citizens Bank Areana in Ontario, CA. The only question I have is how much fish should I use for a system And how do I determine it?
@williamwagner
@williamwagner Жыл бұрын
One fish per 5 gallons is a safe number, but you should plan for the fish to grow, so maybe one fish for every 6 gallons, but you will have to harvest the fish eventually due to their demand on the oxygen in the water. You can replenish the harvested fish with smaller ones. Remember to check on your pH levels and Nitrite/ Nitrate levels in the water. There needs to be a balance between both. The fish have problems when the Nitrite/ Nitrate levels are too high, and the plants have a problem if they are too low. The same would be true if the pH levels are off for the fish and plants alike.

@@williamwagner I might start out with catfish Or some climbing perch cause those are almost available in the place I live And as for the plants I think it'll be better to start out with some spinach A small setup of 500 litre tank and no filtration and maybe a 24 watt motor for pumping water Are there any multimeters to measure ammonia, nitrate and nitrile levels?
@williamwagner
@williamwagner Жыл бұрын
@@k3kr You will want to change the size of your fish tank water volume at least once per hour, so you would need 500 liter per hour pump (with enough head pressure to work with your plumbing). It is better to oversize your pump some to be on the safe side. Your choice of fish and greens will work fine. You can test the water with an API freshwater test kit. You need to tract the development of bacteria in your system to know how the system is functioning.

@williamwagner
@williamwagner 2 жыл бұрын
This is Bill. This project had a great deal of promise. After the dozen missionaries left and the 6 week period to build up the bacterial colonies was finished a number of plants were planted. Lemon grass seemed to be stout enough to weather the harsh rains and winds. The rains definitely had its tolls on the other plants. Eventually, the rains caused a weakness under the base due to erosion. It was rebuilt in January of that next year, but growing things seemed to be a major problem as was mentioned above. The lemon grass seemed to flourish. The next year in visiting, a drainage system was put in along a greenhouse. This seemed to answer the issues created by the rain and wind. Soon after (6 months), the missionaries housing the system was forced to move due to a raise in rent. The system has been dismantled and is sitting in storage waiting for my next return in April/ May of 2022. Other projects in Haiti and Africa have done very well. The keys are keeping and maintaining the water nutrients and pH levels maintained. Check out this link for other systems that are working. www.communities-of-hope.org/ This website is from my friend, Don. If you are interested in other projects I have done such as Rocket Stoves, Ovens, Water Storage, and Raised Grow beds, please check my KZbin channel. Does your pump run 24/7? So as the u syphon drains the dump tank it is also simultaneously filling back up?
@williamwagner
@williamwagner 3 жыл бұрын
Amanda, You are right, the pump is continually supplying the dump tank. The pump serves to move water up to the dump tank which takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Once the water dumps into the grow beds after reaching the U Siphon the water then drains back to the fish tank. The water coming back to the fish tank helps produce oxygen in the water for the fish and later the plants. If the pump is not running, then the plants will not receive the water needed to supply nutrients to them. If you are having a difficult time with a power source at the location of the system, them maybe you could consider a small solar system with battery to power the pump. In this system you will observe a T as it leads from the fish tank. This T has a ball valve which allows the amount of water being pumped to the dump tank or returned to the fish tank. The returned water then also can be used to produce oxygen in the fish tank.

Have you noticed any problems with build up of solids from the water in the grow beds? Are you able to maintain the water level in the sump tank to keep the fish comfortable?
@williamwagner
@williamwagner 3 жыл бұрын
You are perceptive. There can be a buildup of roots after a while, but an addition of worms can help in the clean up of this debris, but to put things into perspective, it would take a great deal of planting seasons before you' d have a build up of solids. As it relates to maintaining water levels in the tank, there is always the issues of evaporation over a weeks period of time, but that can be remedied by adding water as it lowers. Make sure when adding water pH and nitrate levels are maintained. Fish don't like pH levels out of line and plants don't like out of bounds levels in nitrates. You can watch several other videos related to this one. One deals with the water flo of this type of system and the other is a real time view of a build. Using PVC triangle vertical stand will make more production , instead of ‘ this stupid growth bed ‘wasting money to buy stupid gravel 😂😂😂😂😂
@williamwagner
@williamwagner 3 жыл бұрын
I will try to address your questions and comments regarding this system. First concerning the fish tank water. The water was dirty due to the fish were introduced into a new environment. We transported the fish in the pond water we took them out of. In introducing them to a foreign water source, we mixed the different sources to ensure the fish would be able to handle the transition. Second, there is no need for an external filtration system. The gravel in the grow beds will filter the water and return the water clean to the fish tank. The grow bed in this system is actually very good. It uses up a small amount of water compared to other systems. As it relates to a vertical stand you mentioned, you can not compare the two systems. They both serve a different purpose. I have seen the vertical system do excellent, but it requires a completely different set of material and requirements of monitoring. Any system has its benefits and drawbacks. They are not good or bad, smart or dumb. They are just different.

Thanks for your comments. This model works very well. Some configurations only have one tier for the fuel intake. There is no doubt a person must tend to the fire, but larger pieces of wood allows for long burning times. This design of rocket stove allowed me to develop a chamber over the stove using block and brick to develop an oven. I have baked bread, cookies, pizza, and brownies. Same concept as a regular oven. I have built one for my back yard in case of emergencies and also in Honduras. In Honduras, the oven and the stove will help wonen in cooking with a small percentage of wood and the time. You can view my build on my channel. I have also drawn up plans for both. If you want a copy I can send a PDF copy of the stove and oven.

Save some money and just use the hose faucet. No need for a valve. Both do the same job stopping the water.

Your solution is a good one, but the whole idea of using the system as it is is because it allows a continuation of the water flow with minimal dependence on inaction from people. In the current way the system is made the only input needed is the addition of water on a weekly basis and the testing of the water for nitrates and pH levels.

@@williamwagner I was talking about where you get water from at the end. You have 2 valves. One is inline ball type nd other is regular water faucet. At about :20 mark you see the one with red handle, ball type and silver one, regular faucet. You only need one.

I see where you are referring to. You are right. A simple garden hose connection would have been suffice. Our problem on this build was the supplies available at the time of the build. We had limited supplies being in a rural location at 6,000 feet in Yamarangua, Honduras. Thanks for your input. Grateful for your insights and understanding of the aquaponics system.

@@williamwagner If you or someone else has limited supplies, that would be a problem. If all you had at the time was the ball valve and not a faucet or end cap, yeah, you would have to use it to keep water in system. That's why it's a good idea to draw out plans ahead of time and decide where you want what. Easy to draw a line, harder to cut and recut pipe. Good job on system though. When I get back to Philippines, I want o start a system at our place and even maybe make it big enough so my wife's family can run it as a business after they see how it works. Once done, all you need it fish food.

Reminds me of the jenga blocks stacking game and I would be nervous about it falling on me. Can we build something around it to keep it from falling apart?

Actually, the stove is very stable. The key is making sure there is a level and stable base. I used 2 concrete block as the base. The base was placed on pavers. One I built in Honduras, I used gravel to level the initial base, but again used concrete blocks to establish the base.

Nice. Check the bottom of the barrels. If they were originally intended as food grade they will be marked HDPE inside a triangle or a number 2 inside a triangle. Of course that does not eliminate concern what the secondary market user might have done with them.

Appreciate your comments great wisdom. You never know what things were used for before. Maybe it's best to know your seller. In Honduras it's another thing. We were fortunate and got food grade barrels.

Yes, you are right. Metal would preferable, but we had to use the materials available and within budget. Thanks for your comment.
