I remember seeing this film in primary school in the early 70s. I always loved Telstar by The Tornadoes and watching this film planted a seed in my head about 'The Glesga Caurs'. I know have various books and models of trams, buses and The Underground. Many thanks Glasgowwest for all your videos. You made me feel old but very happy.

@Bigfinlach Trolleybuses were, for a long time, seen as the answer to public transport. They were said to combine the advantages of trams, i.e cheap, clean electric power, with the manouverability of the bus....they could ...to an extent.....move about on the road. But they were routebound just like the tram as they relied on overhead cables and trolley poles to collect the current. Most cities abandoned them in the fifties and sixties.

Any chance of seeing the last bit? I'm intrigued to see how it ended.

I love the way that just as the narrator talks about "bugs in the electronics", the video goes all glitchy.

I used to go to school by tram. Woolwich to Red Lion Lane. These were the days when public transport drivers could smoke while they worked.

Thank you for that Glasgowwest. I remember the last night very well even though I was only 4. Argyle Street and St Enoch Sq were packed and it seemed that most of Glasgow had turned out.

This video makes me so proud of my roots. I left Glasgow as a 10 year old in 1985 and i remember being a wee boy on these trains. We just don't have these in NZ.

Tramways are now the future... what if all those networks weren´t closed on the first place? A lot of money saved, and a better public transport for all...

Great video, thanks for posting. I'm fairly sure that the person at 0.42 sitting next to the two women is me - I was 16 and a half at the time and a student at Hillhead High (the passengers are getting on at Hillhead). The subway shut down in May 1977 to get ready for modernisation.

The reason the tram system in Glasgow was made reduntant was due to the fact overhaed powerlines had to be replaced . The corperation in thier wisdom deemed this to expensive .They replaced the corpy with the city council and they are still making woeful decisions to this day .

This is an absolutely tremendous film, thanks for posting it. Am I right in thinking it was called "9 Dalmuir West"? If it is, I remember certain reviewers being a bit snotty about it - "filmed in the modern style, too arty" etc. Twerps. Looks like a certain amount of drink had been taken at the farewell party, don't blame 'em. Let Glasgow Flourish!

'There's an impending sense of loss, of desolation in the air'. 'It was one of the few amenities they could afford, and one of the few pleasant memories they retain...' Bit earnest and patronizing?

you are so wrong, the people of glasgow where never so happy to live in the tennements,a great sense of belonging.the hippy labour planners decided to rip the heart out of the glasgow psyche by building horrendous housing estates in the middle of nowhere, but if they were smart they could have saved a lot of money by modernising some of the beautiful victorian "slums" as you call them.
