for the stress exaggeration factor, regarding the power model, do you use 2 X as a limit, or 4 X as a limit, makes a big difference, as another person commented, seems that there isn't much "science" when it comes to deciding how much of a stress exaggeration factor to use.

Hi Tom, I am trying to make a test protocol for plastic part assembly subjected to thermal cycling. This is to mimic 250 sterlization cycles the product will go through. I was planning to use Coffin Manson equation for accelertion factor calcs and was curious on 2 things, one is the right model for an assembly mainly made out PEEK(plastic) and some stainless steel parts. Second, what value for the co-efficient should I use for plastics, I cannot find it anywhere. Also is there any book you can recommend for plastics reliability testing. Thanks

why in last random vibration "psd vs frequency" graph for +3dB/octave the Grms became twice at 40 Hz ?? as per you, G should get double at 80 Hz as +6dB/octave means doubling the amplitude (as per your dB chart)

Tom. No offense, but this would be much better without you on screen, very distracting with your arm movements and without the fake energy. It's a really good video that's very helpful. Just do a voice-over video and quieten down.

Copied from a site that produces PC/104 cards: With in-house shock and vibe equipment, every design is tested and retested to a minimum of MIL-STD-202 for operation under shock and vibration. Does the 810 test series supercede this 202 test? 19:33 I guess it does. points 14, 23 an 27.

Q1: Is there anything that will change in the equations when testing one material against another, such as plastic, aluminum, etc.? Q2: If, for example, I find from the equations that the life acceleration test is 3 months versus 10 years, can I apply these 3 months intermittently? Due to a power outage to the simulator, would this be harmful? Finally, I would like to thank you personally for the interest you are sharing. Thank you very much...great job

I agree that you cannot prioritize by RPN alone, but your example was poor. If your Sev=10 and your Occur=10, your Det could NOT = 1. The only way you can give a Detection value of 1 or 2 is if you have a Poke Yoke or some type of error proof in place where 1 equals "you cannot MAKE" the feature bad, or a detection value of 2 where "you cannot PASS a part with that feature being bad". So, this could never happen. You should simply say that all Severities equaling 10 should be addressed.

I deeply appreciate your constructive feedback regarding my prior commentary in the DFMEA video. I wholeheartedly acknowledge your perspective on the matter of risk prioritization through the utilization of Risk Priority Numbers (RPNs). Allow me to address the salient points you have raised: RPN Calculation Validity: It is astutely observed that conventional Risk Priority Number (RPN) calculations tend to yield significantly elevated RPN values when both the severity (Sev) and occurrence (Occur) parameters are assigned the maximum value of 10. This, in turn, often renders the assignment of low detection values (Det=1 or Det=2) improbable, given the inherent inverse relationship between these variables. I must underscore that the extreme example presented was employed deliberately to underscore the limitations associated with an exclusive reliance on RPN as a means of risk assessment. While such occurrences are rare, it is plausible for a "1" to be allocated within a DFMEA, bearing in mind that the determination of detection may occasionally be influenced by the expertise level of the engineer engaged in this manual assessment. The Role of Detection: Your emphasis on the pivotal role of detection within the RPN calculation is well-founded. The detection factor assumes a critical function within the purview of risk assessment, serving to pinpoint areas necessitating heightened attention and control measures to avert the actualization of the identified risks. Addressing All Severities: Your proposition that all instances of severity attaining a rating of 10 warrant immediate consideration is a valid assertion. In numerous risk assessment frameworks, the sheer gravity of a high-severity scenario in isolation is sufficient to warrant prioritization, regardless of other influencing factors. It is imperative to recognize that not all situations neatly align with the confines of the RPN calculation model, and instances exist wherein the mere existence of a high-severity issue mandates expeditious action. Context Matters: It is paramount to acknowledge that risk assessment is a bespoke undertaking, devoid of universal applicability. The suitability of employing RPNs is intrinsically contingent upon the specific context, industry, and organizational nuances. While RPNs prove advantageous in many scenarios, some contexts may indeed incline towards an emphasis on severity, as you have aptly surmised. In summary, I concur with your appraisal of the example provided and your accentuation of the primacy of addressing high-severity concerns. It is imperative to comprehend that risk assessment is a multifaceted discipline, wherein RPNs, while undoubtedly valuable, may not emerge as the panacea for all situations. The choice of approach should be judiciously determined by the contextual factors, the industry domain, and the unique intricacies of the risk under consideration. I extend my sincere appreciation for your discerning insights and the elucidation provided on this matter. Thanks for watching!

hi Tom , for the rock tumbler test for mobile phones , do you have some specs ? for how long test should run ? what is acceptable for a mobile phone to look like after the test ? thanks Chris
@tomreshtesting
@tomreshtesting Жыл бұрын
There is IEC spec for tumble/random drop testing. The total number of tumbles that you will perform will be specific to what your company has set for design reliability targets, or it could be you want to tumble your product to failure. The intent and number of cycles will be product, use case, and industry specific, and there isn't a one size fits all # of cycles.

Hi how about electronics equipment , as environment temperature not change so quickly. If temperature change is 3*C /hr , is it required that?
@tomreshtesting
@tomreshtesting 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. Thermal Shock is Great for any electronics regardless of environments. One example is even in a temperature stable environment, an electronic device will vary in temperature depending on the load or task it's performing and the corresponding heat that is generated from the work performed. Thermal Shock can be leveraged to accelerate years of expansion and contraction events in a short period of time to find failure modes/ weakest link in the design or manufacturing process.

are accelerometers good to detect tremors in Alzheimer's patients instead of using piezos?
@tomreshtesting
@tomreshtesting 2 жыл бұрын
Not too familiar with tremors in Alzheimer's patients, but I do know there are white papers on using wireless accelerometers with Parkinson's patients. Only concern I would have is how to reliably create a "connection " of the accelerometer to the patient with minimal decoupling. Most likely a tightly fitted ban with an attached wireless accelerometer would be the best route to go.

In the Random Vibration Accerelated Testing, is "a" the Fatigue strength at a specific stress cycle count? How does one determine "a" if a material and number of stress cycles is known? Seems a little washy to describe a factor in an expression as a "representative constant from a curve"... Is "a" a specific factor in the S-N curve or the result of the S-N curve or something else?
