They are hard to kill. Every winter, I cut mine all the way down to the ground and they grow back every summer. Last year, I did not cut them in time and they turned brown, fell over and smelled like they were rotting. It was too hard to cut them down because they were just goo. My chainsaw wouldn’t even go through them. So I thought I’ll leave them alone when they dry up, I’ll get rid of them. Before that could happen new ones started growing up on the sides of the old ones. Extremely resilient plant.

They are definitely stinky when they rot.

We bought a single banana tree when I was a kid. They would die every few years even though we would haul them into the garage for the winter. We had shoots up until a couple years ago when they finally died off. We never got any bananas from them though.
@wildrootlife28 күн бұрын
Not sure what zone you’re in, but some varieties just take too long to bear fruit and mature before it starts to get cold.

How does one grow bananas pls reply
@fldesigner504729 күн бұрын
I can confirm their resilience. My neighbors pups came up in my yard, from under the fence. They knocked over my tomato rack. I dug up some from my yard and had them out of the ground, bare root, for over a week when we reconfigured our fence. They came back beautifully once we put them in their new location.

Very easily in Zone 9 and above. They love sun, warmth, wet feet, and a long growing season.

I know that typically banana plants can only grow one crop before they get chopped down. Do you think that if this one is just a shoot of the old plant, that they will produce berries?
@wildrootlife28 күн бұрын
My experience is that it will go on to produce fruit and then die, but I’ll be watching this one.

Great info. Are you concerned about slippery elm being endangered? What would be your first choice as a replacement for slippery elm?
@wildrootlife8 ай бұрын
Hey! Yes, I do worry about a lot of these herbs becoming endangered. It's tough. There's a lot of pressure on so many of our faves. Depending on what's going on I might direct someone toward marshmallow or for my bioregion asparagus root and ophiopogon could be good subs for nourishing yin. Do you have any good subs that grow in your area?

Thanks for the info. Sprouts/microgreens is a fascinating topic that I’m only starting to explore. I routinely sprout lentils for my birds but quite recently my wife & I have switched to an exclusively plant based diet & I’m looking to expand on what we do. I’m digging the idea of a premix of seeds like u have going on with your French salad mix, very good idea.

This is great! I just learned about this plant this summer and also discovered one growing in my neighborhood near a creek! The mosquitos tear me UP every season so I’m always looking for help. This is so great! I will go collect leaves tomorrow! I also learned this summer that lemon balm helps with that too. I rubbed some on my arms 3 separate times I went out and no bites. I’m guessing you could make a tincture of both these beauty berry leaves AND lemon balm together? 🤷🏻♀️ thanks for sharing!!

What would you use cayenne oil for? And can you do this with pine needles and what would you use it for? Would it be similar to turpentine?
@wildrootlife9 ай бұрын
Since the cayenne is warming, it traditionally is used externally for situations where warmth makes it better. Fresh pine needles make a nice tea and they contain vitamin C. Turpentine is a distillation process, though sap and the knots of pine trees are sometimes used in salve.
