Between the big BC ferry and the shore is the remains of the much older steam ferry SAN MATEO, built in 1922. She was parked in Lake Union, Seattle for many years but plans to restore her as a museum ship never succeeded and she was sold in 1992 and partially scrapped by the present owner. Her big triple expansion steam engine was very impressive, with beautiful machine work and detailing. A sad end for a historic and proud vessel.

Peltons! It's pretty cool how they work . . . compared to regular turbines, they don't sit in the water. The needle shoots (or pelts!) water at the buckets (1:55), which causes the turbine to turn. They aren't necessarily for large scale generation, but rather plants that have a high head (ie the water leading to the intakes at the powerhouse goes from high to low elevation very quickly). Buntzen 2 hasn't been operational for 20 years or so. Buntzen 1, just slightly up the indian arm, is still very much operational.

I see so many of you tourist's with drones who disregard the laws for flying and get your videos published on social media without consequence, or seemingly for now. I've spent time and money to get proper licensing and certifications to do the same.. and then I see more and more of it being done without! It is illegal to fly in a provincial park -without proper "written" permission.. and I know you don't have this permission because you're breaking more laws by flying over persons within the parks. This is my hobby too! www.pc.gc.ca/en/voyage-travel/regles-rules/drones www.tc.gc.ca/en/services/aviation/drone-safety/flying-drone-safely-legally.html PC1915118xxx

true that! it’s one of my biggest nightmares to get sucked into a pipe and cut into pieces by a turbine underwater... :) i always feel very uncomfortable at harbors for example... any combination of water, cement, pipes and turbines - other than the scale of home equipment - freaks me out to the max! maybe there is a name for that kind of phobia... :) i need to check that

@@seraphimipx2611 Look up Thalassaphobia. I've worked as a ship hand and have phobia about. Being near any inlet piping or near the undersides of ships. 4 years ago a guy fell in and was actually caught in a dam current, got pulled under and surfaced 1500ft away out the outlet for the spillway in pieces as he'made his way through a hydro pump station. Yeah that's why I'm rightfully scared haha

Swot Roke i read into it but i don’t think that’s what i mean... or rather fear. you see i can be on boats or swim in the sea... it is also a bit uncomfortable but the endless blue of the water is fine with me. what i absolutely can’t stand is man-made, concrete structure that come in contace with water... swimming pools are fine. :) more like floodgates, spillways, a concrete wall that suddenly descends into water - like a harbor wall. even if i know in a floodgate for example water is only pumped inside, i would have a heart attack having to swim in there. i feel sick seeing a boat drifting towards a dam on video only. the simple idea that there is a tunnel underwater that sucks in water and leads to a turbine is killing me. i did check a lot of phobia lists but i really struggle to find anything related to that fear. - in fact the comments on this video are the first time i have ever seen other people talking about this! my friends and basically everyone thinks i am crazy :D

This isn't music it is fucking irritating, that's what it is. And Pelton wheels are extremely inefficient compared to circular turbines. No wonder this plant isn't being used any longer.
@douro20
@douro20 6 жыл бұрын
They can have efficiencies up to ninety percent. Nearly all the energy in the flowing water is transferred to the wheels during operation.
@dogmannz
@dogmannz 6 жыл бұрын
No it's not - simply because Pelton wheels are not contained inside any kind of structure, the vast majority of water splashes to the sides and the energy is wasted. With an enclosed turbine there is nowhere for the water to go than through the turbine.
@andyfeimsternfei8408
@andyfeimsternfei8408 6 жыл бұрын
@@dogmannz You are totally wrong. Pelton wheels are some of the most efficient turbines available, especially for high head. Look it up. They are impulse turbines and reach efficiencies in the upper 90% range, and over a wide range of flows (controlled be the needle nozzle).
@googleuser6866
@googleuser6866 6 жыл бұрын
You're an idiot. Pelton wheels are used in very high-head situations, Francis turbines in medium-head, and propeller turbines in very low-head facilities. Get an education before you mouth-off.
@russellking9762
@russellking9762 3 жыл бұрын
@@dogmannz you are talking about drag...which is a different thing....your argument has some validity in that after the water hits the cup it splashes back on the spinning wheel causing drag...but that is overcome somewhat by the wheels hi speed rotation and efficiency...also the Pelton wheel is not affected by cavitation...unlike the Francis and Kaplan turbines...
