i met allan the first time in 1977. allan was a much talked about p.d. at wayk lehigh acres florida. i met him to talk about a job. he didn't hire me. i was a xetra-fm in tijuania ( san diego market), then at kgb-fm. we had a mutual friend clark race who told me allan was p.d. at ksfo. i took a trip up 101 and met with allan in his office at the fairmont hotel. he still didn't hire me. i had no idea the talent i was dealing with in allen until clark told me his history.wow! i went further north to mendocino county. i did land a job at an am/fm in ukiah. i was there 4 years and also worked at the newspaper (don rey media) in fort bragg. i helped put two local access t.v. stations on the air before i quit the business and returned to school to earn credentials as a respiratory therapist. my life has been blessed. i made tremendous friendships (and a few enemies) in the short time i was in media. most of all i'll forever remember allan and clark as great people and very talented radio guys. clark retired and last i heard he passed several years ago. he and his wife were managing a bed and breakfast in new england. i have no idea where allen is. God bless these men.

I watched Wayne sing this on Johnny Carson's show and I thought it was so beautiful. He told Johnny he was going to release it as a single. Less than a week later, Kenny Rogers quickly recorded it and put it out before Wayne did. I'll never forget that. I liked Kenny Rogers but I have always thought he back stabbed Wayne, who then chose not to release it himself.

This song has been done exceptionally well by multiple artists. To me, that's one sign of a great song. And I feel that Wayne Newton has done this as well as anyone else. Never knew this existed. Thanks for posting another priceless treasure we can all share.
