There are some bird species that actually do this as well. They will plant their own egg into a nest and hold the other babies hostage, and force the actual parent of them to take care of their offspring instead. It's pretty disturbing.

fun fact: cuckoo birds push their siblings eggs out of the nest to get more food. they are also messed up and eat baby chicks from other nests

The mother was slow and died because she was surprised because there was only one bird in the nest, see how she looks for them in 2:19, The evil bird killed their siblings, and after the mother dies the last, and evil bird has no care and no food now so the Birds that are circling the evil bird are waiting for him to die of starvation. If the evil bird did not kill their siblings or ask the mom for more food he would have survived.
