Thnaks so much for posting this - I've been trying to track down this album for ages! I saw the band play this live at the Half-Moon in Putney in 1989 I think! I was a student of Dave Buxton's for several years in Bristol before I turned pro and also played with Claude Deppa at one point years ago. What a fiery sound he has!

And Dave Buxton. I think Dave played the piano and Steve the synth on the album. They definitely played it live like that. @@martinbaum5354

Nice to read all those comments. We had a lot of fun doing this. I especially loved playing with Gary - such a funny man and wonderful musician. The double-act of him and Han was something to be seen! And all the other great guys - Dave, Orphy, the much missed Mamadi Kamara, Simon, Steve, Claude, Kevin, Chris, Ernst, Mano, Pete H, and my old school pal and former Sphereboy: Andy. There was a big panic when he left the huge, almost finished, master scores on a coach in Outer Mongolia!

It's almost as if Andy has spent the rest of his career getting as far away as he can from his early work. A wonderful album. I would love to hear more like this.

His early work, particularly this and Introductions are still my favourites.

I went to the Filmhouse.in Edinburgh to see a documentary film of this album. It should really be on DVD, but it’s not. Would love to see it again. Those were great times in British jazz, late 80s, early 90s.

Thanks for the affirming comments about the film - I have a ropey old DVD of it somewhere if you can find a way to transfer it and BFI catalogued it - but nothing ever came of it - It was an adventure to make with some amazing musicians and I am really glad you enjoyed it.

This is, bar none, my favourite jazz album of all time, and an unsung masterpiece. Andy Sheppard has been a consistent presence on the uk jazz scene for decades, but I can't think of anyone who has reached the lyrical heights of this album. It is truly a work of art. Incredible playing by Andy and his beautifully amassed band of jazz brothers. It's all about the melody. Sing, sing, sing.....

This Andy Sheppard CD was dedicated to Gil Evans, Carla Bley, and George Russell and, like those three, Sheppard does not use his fellow horn players in conventional brass and reed sections, but as individual players. The ensembles tend to be crowded but loosely organized, with the horn riffs often stealing the spotlight from the soloists. Sheppard wrote and arranged the four lengthy tracks, and his 15-piece group (which includes two keyboards, cello, and two drummers) has among its stars vibraphonist Orphy Robinson, cellist Ernst Reijseger, trombonist Gary Valente, trumpeter Claude Deppa, and the leader's tenor. Although there is nothing too radical about the colorful music, this fine effort shows that there is still life to be found in big band jazz.
