Brilliant video - I moved down South from Maryport when I was 5 in 1967 My mam told me when I was born I lived in old Northside - Im not sure if the houses behind the church in your video at 12 mins 8 seconds are Old Northdside (I would love to see video footage of Northside ) My grandad and dad all worked at Siddick pit and I can only find one photo of the colliery

This s a brilliant VIDEO - I lived down south since 1967 (since When I was 5 ) . I was actually born in that Hospital and my mam said we initially lived in OLD Northside before moving to Mayport. I have very early memories of rows of houses with chimneys smoking from Workington and the scenes in this video look familiar Thanks

Sad to see how many old shops are no longer in business. I could be in the minority of people who think the “new” town centre built after this is better but there’s even more empty shops now and the general upkeep of the town is far worse than back in ‘98

My old college, what a shame it had character. Our town has demolished nearly all of what made it good. No industry either. So you have any steel works demolition videos?❤

@ 0-28.....just look at those petrol and diesel prices per litre! Was this around 1996 to 1999?

@@mickbeeee LOL...the date was at the end....24/8/2000. (Looks like 79p actually!). We'd had three years of savage petrol duty increases thanks to Gordon Robber Brown and New Labour. Litre priced were just 69p in 1997. Rachel Robber Reeves will be doing the same very soon!

I lived in Workington from 1965 to 1983, and it has changed a lot since then in certain parts like the town centre. Station Road and the railway station look the same.

Pencil factory, Soap factory, Chocolate factory all just memories now. Some great sounding names in that neck of the woods . Cleator and Marsh on, just a couple. Workington Flar Bottom Rail. Carried enough of that in my time. 👍😁

That old 805 is far too small for the job, a bigger machine would have had the whole lot down in a morning.

My house in Northside backed onto the cutting further down towards the Derwent. It's a nice footpath and long-distance cycle track now. Good for walking Northside's "High-Speed Dogs" (retired Greyhounds from the nearby kennels). Obviously we would prefer a railway; but if it had to go, then it's left something worthwhile behind it.

Great series of videos Rye. I can remember when the demolition was going on with the tall college block, that it got put on hold for a period of time, as the records could not be located as to if the mine shaft had been capped, before the building of the college. In the end up it was discovered that it had been capped.

Thanks for posting this. What makes it special for me, is the accent. probably a thousand years of history behind it, all the way back to the Norse settlers of this region. My local accent is of Danish descent but sadly is fading much too fast.
