Just reading Dwight's biography called 'Dwight Frye's last laugh'..such a talented guy,he had so much more to give than just half wits in horror movies..even though he portrayed them brilliantly..his Renfield in Dracula was superb!

given how "primitive" 1931 movie productions were, this is a very good movie compared to the admittedly polished 1941 version... Bebe Daniels is somewhat better than Mary Astor... Ricardo Cortez rises above the overall staginess and limitations of the era

It is so true what you said. His performence is just gold. It is so real. You really want to jump out and save him from the cops. As short as this scene is....you can really see how marvelous he was in his art.
