just found your channel. Yes, try and error is one way to learn. I try not to do that. Do you have some ops schedule or just run trains?
@FultonRoad-yv3me3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I've found over the past few years that using the switch list program referred to in the April 2024 video always gives me a set of cars to come back to from one session to another and gives me a lot of enjoyment. No schedule just whenever the urge to run a train strikes.

Thanks for the feedback. In this case you could just use a set of dice to call the cars for a specific op. just an idea.

Assuming that UP 1310 is HO scale, what is that oversized sand-filler part called and where did you get it? Or is it molded as part of the shell? I have a prototype that I want to do that has that feature but I'm unfamiliar with it.
@FultonRoad-yv3me3 ай бұрын
Hi Jeff. 1310 is HO scale. I think it's molded onto the shell. I've never looked to take it off. This is an Atlas MP15DC that's about 8 yrs old. I just did a quick search. Atlas' parts diagrams for the MP15DC Gold Model shows a "Sand Hatch Large" part #990225. Here's the link: shop.atlasrr.com/t-partsdiagrams.aspx Scroll down until you find the HO scale MP15DC Gold. Not sure if this is useful to you but you might be able to make it work. Good luck!

Not a problem. I've been to Atlas website to look at their parts diagrams many times. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether my shell has that indentation at the top of the filler molded in.

Really beautiful switching layout with wonderful details. Would have loved to actually see the switching going on in the video. Unfortunately there were cuts done like every two seconds, so that felt a bit rushed to me 🙂. I would prefer to watch longer scences of the switching action, but obviously that´s just my personal taste😉. Keep up the good work, of course I subscribed! I just started a tiny N scale switching layout myself, but I´m still early in the build.
@FultonRoad-yv3me3 ай бұрын
Thank you. I like slow switching and I'd like to show more but it does take more time on a video. Not everyone likes to see all of the moves. I try to strike a balance that will show what I'm trying to explain and provide some entertainment. I think N scale is awesome! Good luck with your switching layout.

I already commented on your latest video today, and I promise to try and not spam you with comments as I go back and watch other videos. I am completely new to model railroading. I am determined to build my first 2x4 layout as a fun learning exercise. Channels like this are inspirational. Another gentleman told me, "don't worry about track layout worry about what story you want your railroad to tell." I'd love to know more of the story w/ Fulton Road.

Rattling around in my old brain is the idea that I'll do a video on how this layout came to be. Maybe soon . . . Thanks again.

Just found this channel in my recommends. I don't understand any of the stuff you're talking about prior to running trains b/c I know the square root of jack shit about trains and how they operate. Your layout is absolutely gorgeous. How did you do those cracked up roads and concrete?! That looks incredible. Going back thru your other vids now 😎
@FultonRoad-yv3me4 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comments. One of the reasons for the "dump" of videos in January which kicked off this channel was to make the point that few people get to the stage of creating layouts that look like the ones that are so popular. I've made many mistakes and continue to make them. This layout has taken me a long time to get to its present stage and it's not near completion. I'm not the first to make this observation. My encouragement to you is to try stuff, fail, and try again, many times. You'll get there! The cracked roads were inspired by Tom Johnson's work. If you're unfamiliar with his work go over to MRH Forums and do a search for his name. He works in HO. Hang in there.

Sometimes I need lots of coffee. Apparently my brain is not fully engaged yet. I meant to say in that second sentence that "few people get to the stage of creating layouts that look like the ones that are so popular [on their first, second or even third attempt]. Dan

Hi all, newbie here. Wanna build a 2 ft (610 mm) gauge in N scale. Any suggestion on the tracks? Nn3? 00-9? Z? Thanks in advance!!
@FultonRoad-yv3me4 ай бұрын
Thanks for stopping by. If I understand correctly, you're interested in building a narrow gauge layout in 2 ft gauge. I've never worked in that gauge but I can tell you that 9 mm gauge track which is what n scale track in the U.S. is based on is used to represent both 2.5 and 3 ft. narrow gauge railroads such as those that operated in the Rocky Mountains and in Maine, among other places. Peco makes excellent "narrow gauge" 9 mm track. Last time I bought some you could get flex track and small radius turnouts. May I also recommend that you join the Facebook Micro/Small Model RR Layouts group. There are a lot of very talented modelers and many model narrow gauge railroads. If you do, you should post your question there. Best of luck to you!
@FultonRoad-yv3me4 ай бұрын
Something was bothering me about my response. I assumed that you want to model in HO scale, 1/87th. But it occurred to me that you might be wanting to model in N scale, 1/160th in the US. I know that Nn3 which is narrow gauge in N scale, usually 3 feet between the rails, uses Z scale track. I don't have much experience with Z scale track. So, I'm going to stand by my previous advice which is to either search for a forum that models 2 ft. gauge trains or do a search here on KZbin or see if you get a response on Facebook. I don't want to mislead you and I'm out of my comfort zone. Maybe someone else can chime in and shed some light on this issue.

To remove decals, I use Walthers Solvaset in the same manner you were using alcohol. For stubborn decals, I let a small puddle of the Solvaset sit on the decal for a minute or two.

@@FultonRoad-yv3me Very much did enjoy this! Some great modeling in there. 😍😎 My health is a mess and modeling ability is a bit diminished, but there is still much enjoyment in playing around with On30, Gn15, HOn30. Layout, such as it is, is a little shelf in HO, but track spacing is such that freelance On30 and Gn15 can be run on it. I've only got 2 boxcars and a tank car of commercially produced On30 items. My freelance On30 bashes and builds are smaller, more industrial or estate tram sized, and except for some passenger cars made from Bachmann On30 trolley bodies, fit in deep tackle box inserts made by Plano Molding Company. That combine railcar at 4:48 which is on a Bachmann trolley chassis is very much the On30 style which appeals to me. That critter following it looks like it might be Gn15, or On30, and is a bit more rustic than my style but is likewise really appealing. That little aggregates supplier layout at 3:56 is quite nice. Turntable at end is nice. This video is full of eye candy.

I'm sorry to hear about your health issues. Playing with trains no matter the size is fun! I enjoy all the scales even though I've only modeled HO and N. I wish I had room for the larger scales like G or F but age marches on and there's the realization that a garden layout is lots of work. I'd always wanted to attend a Narrow Gauge Convention and finally got the opportunity. No regrets. The modeling is amazing! Thanks again for your comments.

I enjoyed the slow switching. Do you wish you had added another spur, for instance, in that area with the storage units? I'm struggling to keep my track plan simple for my shelf layout and yet still have a few things to do when I operate. On the other hand, the space you left open seems almost luxurious compared to other layouts that have so many tracks crammed in. It looks open and realistic. Always enjoy your monthly updates!
@FultonRoad-yv3me5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I never know whether switching shots are too much and too slow. I did originally have another spur at WSI which you can see in the March 2021 video (Video 9). I sometimes wish I'd kept that track plan. But, my weird little run around broken up by a street actually adds enough complexity that on days with lots of cars to either pick up or deliver it makes me think through the moves which I like.
