the Pentagon retired 147 Stryker MGS systems early. Perhaps you could get some of these lightly armored vehicles or even some more Bradleys at fire sale prices after Ukraine wins.

I found Kaunas a pleasant surprise, with a great pedestrian walkway filled with nice stores, restaurants and very modern.

I can say that Lithuanian beers are better than Latvia's. The day Lithuania joined the EU, the best 3 breweries in LT were bought up by a party in the EU.

Hi! About scandinavians being cold and closed off: I`m from north of the arctic circle, and Northern Norway is in general almost extremely extroverted, at least compared with how it is in the south eastern part. Scandinavia is long, from Tne North Cape to the german border, so we`re not all the same. Don`t judge until you know. I`ve heard that in Bergen it`s seen as unpolite not to sit beside another person on thje bus even if a lot of seats are empty. That says it all, doesn`t it?

Riga’s story how it was constructed, it’s history during the tsar times is different from Vilnius. Once you are in Riga you should see the city with a guide, it’s so different than just to read in a book and walk around by yourself (my experiences). Riga always had different status in the region than other cities from the Baltic states. Nevertheless living in vilnius myself I love the old towns of both Vilnius and Riga.

I think this force is to dam small. Russia is quickly learning from its mistake and we should too. For Ukraine they about 100,000 soldier ready to go. There is no way 5,000 Nato forces can stop them. Use more automation, set barriers, walls and maybe mine some roads leading to the Baltic countries. Just saying!

I feel that most of Lithuanian tourists don't go to Rīga, but in summer rather go to seaside cities like Liepāja and Ventspils, and also to Jurmala. I myself do the opposite, since I already received sea funnnes back home in Latvia, I like to go to Kaunas, Klaipeda and Vilnius in autumn or spring! Eat some good dizkukuliai!

It's strange to see the Bundeswehr parading, much more in a different country. We usually don't do military parades in Germany.

Lithuanians' brains are as big as a bowl. They only know that the name of Taiwan is the Republic of China, and the name of the mainland is the People's Republic of China. Although the name is different, each other's constitutions stipulate that their respective territorial sovereignty, including the mainland and Taiwan, are essentially one country, but the country's name is different.

@@LithuaniaExplained Good point. Perhaps a better analogue would be the Connecticut’s Governor’s Guards. They are four volunteer militias that belong to the Governor of Connecticut, somewhat independently of the State’s other military forces. Their arms training is facilitated by DHS, and State Police rather than DOD, and National Guard.

I actually visited during the day of the event, I walked from the bridge side as seen at 5:45 and then walked up and past these tanks as they were just getting into pre-position before the event. Took a couple pictures with my phone and saw one guy drinking an energy drink, he was super chill and nice and gave a peace sign as he was peeking out of his tank :)

Vilnius would benefit of a real tramway now. Build a tramway on those streets with several trolleybus routes, such as Stotis-Sauletekis and Valkininkų st.-Žirmūnų žiedas. Leave the rest of the lines served with renewed trolleybus network. My hometown (Tampere, Finland) is half the size of Vilnius and we just built a brand new tramway with two lines. Vilnius has no excuse to not have trams, you don't need to build it inside the the Old Town either :)

I'm from Poland, and I never ever thought anything bad or disrespectful about Lithuanians. To be honest, I don't understand why on the other direction there is so strong resentment against Poland. I know that the PL-LT Commonwealth was described or perceived as a "Polish colonization" of Lithuania. But can you please give me an example when the Duke of "colonized" country became a king of the country, which "colonized" his country? This is an absurd, this is not even close to logical thinking. It's a pity that none of Central and Eastern European countries didn't want to join Intermarium Federation proposed by Piłsudzki. What is the European Union or the NATO right now? Very close to that idea. That led to conflicts instead of alliances, and in the end, the growth of the Soviet Union influences: poverty and tyranny shared by them in our countries. From my perspective, strong resentment against Poland was established by Russians to create anti-polish resentment in the Lithuanian society, to justify that "Russians are better than Poles because Poles were bad to Lithuanians". Lithuanian brothers, nobody has nothing against you in Poland. We need each other like a family. Together, we stand, divided we fall.

From someone who moved to Kaunas from a small town 7 years ago, hated it at first, wished I was in Vilnius instead, but has grown to love it very much: It is way smaller than Vilnius, which can be seen as both a pro and a con. I see it as the former. It’s cosier The nightlife is not as vivid and active as it is in Vilnius, but I don’t mind The architecture is different. Kaunas is mostly known for its modernistic, Lithuanian art deco buildings, but you have to kind of know what to pay attention to. And various small and big churches. Vilnius has a more historical feel to its old town buildings. Kaunas old town is easier to navigate. Ofc Vilniaus street and the old town surrounding it with little shops and cafes and stuff. Then you got Laisvės avenue and its parallels: Putvinskio, Donelaičio, Kęstučio streets. All of them lovely to walk around, beaded with galleries and museums, many of them about Lithuanian history or art, which I miss in Vilnius. From Kęstučio you can choose to go the science island and Žalgiro arena and sports complex, the Akropolis mall, or, like me, pick any of the one hundred hidden stairs from Putvinskio/Laisvės up to Žaliakalnis, and explore the cosy neighbourhood,Perkūno alėja and the neighbouring streets with 20th century apartments, or the holy grail, my haven and consolation - Ąžuolynas, the meaty oak park in basically the middle of the city, with its lovely paths and hidden treasures. Around it’s perimeter you’ll find the lovely Ąžuolynas library, zoo park at the other end, the student town/campus, another, wilder grove with a small creek, lovely food trucks at both ends, Žalakalnio neighbourhood with traditional lithuanian houses in half circle streets (gėlių ratas and minties ratas). It’s a lovely place to live in, I think. Both Nemunas and Neris shores are walkable for long slow strolls or bike rides. But what I enjoy the most is the art scene, the giant graffiti, poetry, hidden gems like the Yard Gallery (a used to be ghetto turned neighbourhood turned fluxes art nook). Countless small artist residence museums, several galleries. It is lovely.

That’s exactly right. This christmas was the first time i went to Riga to spend some time walking around on foot, as opposed to driving to the airport at night. It really did feel like slightly more german lithuania in terms of architecture, or a mix between Klaipėda and Vilnius maybe? And it’s almost like you’re in another country but not exactly? Truly a liminal space feeling. Slightly exhausting and confusing. I’d love to spend more time in Latvia and maybe learn some of the language

I live in Vilnius all my life and I really love the coziness. however, it expanded very recently so it definitely feels like Riga is larger. no tram or metro is a painful topic for me. there were many debates and plans but eventually the outcome was that this project is too expensive and will never pay off. this is sad coz public transport in vilnius is trash, neighbourhoods are spread very widely and far away from each other. maybe in far future there will be better possibilities
