What about the severity of EV fires compared to ICE? Which are potentially more fatal. Aren’t EV fires hotter, more difficult to put out and require some special techniques to extinguish? Why is insurance more expensive for EV’s? Aren’t they more likely to be totaled after a fire? You will not put out an EV fire with a car extinguisher? Maybe EV drivers require training to properly charge their cars safely to avoid fires? More data is needed.

If you want to produce batteries you have to be able to answer yes to at least two of the following questions. 1) Are your batteries better than what others make? 2) Are your production processes better than others? 3) Can you deliver cheaper batteries than all other producers? Take also into account that China has nearly monopoly on some of the raw material used to produce batteries. You must also have a long lasting contract with a major off taker of your batteries. With Northvolt they had obsolete production equipment from China where all the menus and manuals that were written only in Chinese so they had to employ a number of Chinese workers. Frankly it all seemed like a sofisticated scam to squeeze as much as possible of tax money from EU and the Swedish state. They built up a hype and sold out their stocks before it all collapsed. The losers are taxpayers and some pension funds.

In the Netherlands, many had high hopes for BYD coming with affordable EV's. Sadly, the cheapest start at €36.500. So even a lot more expansive than EU build EV's. I guess, these updates will make the BYD even more dear. 6 weeks ago, we bought the Dongfeng Nammi Box for €23.400 with full options. Funny thing is, due to the smaller battery (42kWh) and the lighter weight of the Nammi, it is much more efficient than the BYD. On average it uses around 12kWh per 100km, and that is with this temperature. The "warmer" periode first weeks of November, above 10 degrees, it did 11kWh to 100km. So, we are glad to have kept €13.000 in the pocket.

With commodity products, if a country subsidizes its output to gain a price advantage and dominate market share, it could lose in the long run if competitor companies promote technology and production cost superiority (which are highly related). If China sells for less than the production cost, buy from them. However, if your production cost is abnormally high because of bureaucratic costs and delays, you will lose even if you provide equal subsidies. If it takes 5 to 10 years for you to go from concept to production, you will lose in a rapidly changing technology. The plant will be obsolete by the time you build it, and you will lose. That is the US problem. Thanks to regulatory delays and bureaucrats, we can't get anything done on a reasonable time scale. Wage rates don't count in these high-tech businesses, where sales per worker are measured in millions of euros.

It's definitely not "all about EVs moving forward". Except first world countries, no one actually ready, nor willing to go full EVs moving forward. And have close to zero infrastructure for that. I already provided this example. Recently our region was left without electricity for whole day. Hurricanes in USA left hundreds of thousands without anything... and in this conditions you speaking about full ev mode? Yeah right...! Keep on dreaming

Why are the Chinese selling so many EVs in South East Asia and South/Central America then? Power outages aren’t great for running petrol/gas pumps or cash registers either. I know from our recent storm in the UK where I had to abort a journey in my petrol company car because I was low on fuel in a rural area and I couldn’t refuel. In hotter countries I hear stories of people recharging their EVs from home solar/battery systems after bad storms and ferrying ICE car drivers about in the aftermath. Just saying!

Tesla US is not independent in the manufacture of batteries. Whether US, Korea or Japan, the core tech and the advance main manufacturing equipment are China. Korea and Japan only produces niche manufacturing equipment. Northvolt has no other alternative but to import those advance equipment from China. The Chinese had enough and are fed up of the immoral, reckless and dirty tactics used by US to sanction China. The tech counter attack from China could be very devastating as seen in the recent ban on the export of key raw materials and the use of Chinese technology. The Chinese also use the direct product rule that was used and abused by US against China.
@tooltalk18 күн бұрын
This is absolutely not true. It's not that the Japanese/Korean suppliers are "niche," but that they are locked out of China's market which accounts for some 2/3+ of the battery production. They are still regarded as high-grade, but also more costly. The Chinese counterparts are able to undercut the Japanese/Chinese by as much as 50% because of their gov't subsidies. It's also widely known that Wuxi even sold their equipments at loss to get their foot in the US market from SK On for Ford/Oval factory in Georgia not too long ago. I'm guessing that Northvolt obviously also tried to save a few bucks and ordered a whole bunch of "turnkey" solutions which turned out to be anything but. ...
@johnwilson574319 күн бұрын
The first thing a new CEO will probably do is divest themselves of some of the deadwood "Old" legacy Companies. Why? Because at the moment, Chinese Companies still see that buying "Old" European Companies will get them a faster public acceptance for the BEV cars. So, Tavares always said Stellantis would never sell Alpha Romeo or Lancia. Perhaps Maserati. Guess what will happen soon? Yes, Chinese Companies will be sniffing around again. I mean, they already snapped up MG, Volvo, Polestar, Lotus. They saw that it would be an easier entry if the public still vaguely thought the Cars were still British or Swedish etc. and would get better acceptance.
@markuc18 күн бұрын
Personally I think it's stupid for Chinese companies to buy legacy brands, pretty soon the global buyers will associate Chinese cars with quality and performance. I guess on the flip side it makes sense for someone like stellantis to sell some brands while they still have some value.

The Chinese will wipe out Stellantis, that is why the CEO was sacked the company was collapsing. This will not stop the inevitable. This will give VW some short-term relief however they too will collapse. The only way ANY EV manufacturer will be able to survive outside the US is by Government support. Legacy car makers who invested so heavily on EV are in dire financial strife. Its the circle of life, the British once had a industry, the Americans killed it, then the Japanese did it to the Americans, then the Koreans did the Japanese, now it's China who will be the big winners. Twenty years from now, there will be only one country making EV's in any large number.
@onetwothreefour-s1n19 күн бұрын
Seems likely. The USA and European tariffs are great ways for those countries to bury their heads in the sand.
@trevorgale117619 күн бұрын
@@onetwothreefour-s1n Tariffs are not sustainable, I'm in Australia, we once had a car industry. The Government paid car makers hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer money to stay here, money they sent straight back to head office then they ran. China can flood a market at a loss in the short term, then play the long game. Here, all cars are imports, so we don't care anymore. I purchased a Haval H6, it's a good car, much cheaper than the competition. Tariff protection means the consumer pays more directly AND indirectly through higher taxes.
@onetwothreefour-s1n19 күн бұрын
Stellantis fired Tavares because he refused to back away from his ev commitments. The day after trump won, Stellantis began testing bringing back v8 engines. After all the USA emissions laws were going to be reversed under Elon trump presidency. I'm pretty sure that the Tesla model 2 isn't going to happen. That leaves the Chinese (brands and partners) to pick up the batton of small, cheap EVs. There's no coincidence that it is the Chinese battery makers who are making all the running with high energy density batteries, is there? The UK has spent 50+ years blaming unionised workers for its spectacular inability to manbufacture pretty much ANYTHING. Yet in the same period other EUROPEAN (ie working under the same legislative constraints) have prospered significantly, and with far, far more unionisation and representation of organised labour on the boards.
