Do I think there will be some kind of economic "collateral damage" for the rest of the world. WELL, if a full-blown multi-year recession is "collateral damage" in any western country that has a major auto manufacturing presence ...

Instead of competing with China on battery technology (the battle has been lost), join them. Compete with them in other areas where you have a competitive edge. Now that northvolt is in bankruptcy, I think the money invested in northvolt would have been better spent luring in CATL or other Chinese battery makers to produce batteries in the eu.

I think even more important is the entire green energy thing. An EV isn't great running on electricity generated with coal. China is nailing that as well with solar panel and battery prices crashing and both the quality and capacity through the roof. Sure we in the west can't compete but maybe we need to be subsidising our green tech companies as does China, to help save the planet.

Wait a minute, there are 25X more ICE than EV's. So saying of 100K cars there are more fires in ICE is lies and damn lies. EV's burn more much much hotter than ICE and emit huge amounts of toxic cases. EV's generate their own oxygen and even burn under water. ICE fires are easy to put out, EV's are extremely difficult to put out.

If Europe and America "Focused" less on high margin vehicles and more on making cars for the Volks again as it were they'd be MUCH better off. But as it stands now? The value for dollar aspect is way off... For example there's no Ford Focus EV equivalent and that's a problem... Ditto for an electric Jetta or Golf in the same price range. Yes they make the I.D. series but the MSRP's aren't even comparable... There's your problem!

I think Northvolt was setup to fail, it was based on some Chinese machines that they could never get to work. Also Rare earths are not rare, it's just that China has cornered the market on mining, processing, and refining but anyone could do the same somewhere else, but China has a command economy so they can command their people to buy EVs and they do, they can command their companies to mine the materials for EVs even if the mining operations don't make a profit.

The lack of battery preconditioning in the winter is more of an issue. 21c is actually the optimum operating temperature for EV batteries, 25c is not going to degrade them. The Springs tiny battery, it's not just a low kwh battery, it's actually very small, wil have no problems with heat management in Northern Europe. But if will suffer from significant loss of range and slow charging speeds in the winter.

I would like to see WeLion/Nio mobile battery charger for EVs with 10-20kwh in that semi-solidstate battery with fast charging tech. That could weight maybe 50-70kg, but it could give you 50-150km just in case to drive to nearest AC/DC charger. It could be small pack that you could take to rear boot.

I call BS on this. The SU7 can't be imported in the US because it hasn't complied with the safety tests required for US passenger vehicles. It might be imported only as a PROP model to be studied and not legally drivable on roads.

The lack of liquid cooling is the reason it has low charging speeds and obviously the motor is also not capable of pulling much power from the battery. I think it will basically be a non issue for this reason. The internal resistances will never be enough to cause significant degradation. Davia will have also done a tonne of research about who is likely to buy these cars and what their usage demands will be before they even started engineering it, so I think they've made a reasonable call. I don't think this should put off buyers for whom this car makes sense in the first place. Lessons will have been learned about battery longevity since the EVs of 15 years ago
@TheChargeShow12 күн бұрын
I think you make some great points here. It's important to remember though for anyone who lives in a warm place, such as Italy, Greece, South of France, Australia, Texas etc, that by the car just being there, not being driven is detrimental to the battery health. Or if you drive over the road which has been heated up immensely by the sun all day, and then pull up over it which going places, the heat raises into the batteries. In these instances, these cars should be seriously considered. But again, given that the car isn't going to cost huge money in the first place, this makes the battery degradation less of a concern for a lot of people. My argument, and the reason why 90% of people in my recent poll agreed with me, is that it really doesn't cost the earth to add a fairly simple battery cooling solution. BYD offer it for $1000 more, with an extra 8kWh in the battery too. It's not overly useful to argue FOR the lack of cooling, given that it will be us the consumers paying for this in a few years time, and the big tax avoiding businesses that will again be raking in more profits when we need a new car.

I've just driven my base model Tesla from Adelaide to Sydney (about 1500km) and return, Like you, I need to take breaks every 2-3 hours, equating to 250-350km, which actually matched well with charging stops. So when driving along the major routes, having a battery range of 350-400km is quite adequate. But to be able to drive long non-standard routes, where there is a paucity of chargers, I would feel much more comfortable with a 500km range - anything more than this is probably unnecessary, even in Australia.

We tested the BYD, but the cheapest BYD Dolphin (Active was not on sale) started around €34k. We bought the Dongfeng Nammi Box . . . . . . hands down the winner in all categories. So, that Seagull will never be a match for the Nammi. The finnish, build quality, the standard equipement/features, of that Nammi BOX punches far over its class. In the Netherlands for €23.500 (42kWh battery) and that Dolphin is €30.000. When the Seagull is even below the specs of the Dolphin . . . . i fear no one will buy it for a price that is over €18k. We would not buy the Dolphin Active, even when it was €3.000 cheaper than the Nammi Box. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3uTeIuKpKmAjcUfeature=shared

The reason he has been so publicly driving a Chinese EV is because Republican CEOs are always looking for new ways to shut down manufacturing jobs in America and give those jobs to China. This is most likely an assessment period, and he will cut a deal for them to manufacture an EV with the Ford brand. At the year-end Republican Gala, as the CEOs laugh and brag about how many America jobs they've shut-down, it's nice to know that Ford maintains bragging rights too. No doubt Mary Barra will be driving one soon too - she wouldn't be caught dead in a GM - not on her $30 Million compensation.
