I sailed on the SS Santa Maria and Captain Jennings was a very good Captain.👍

Atacama 🇸🇴...

Outrageous, not a sign of trainers, body piercings, tattoos, baseball caps ( back to front ), etc? What is the world coming to? Ps. I can’t see any water slides, disgraceful!

My family took a sister ship, USS Santa Mariana, from Lima, Peru to Florida in late 1965. These cargo/passenger ships kept the passengers in the center of the boat where the pitching was less severe. Our ship even had stabilizers (fins that could be extended sideways into the water that greatly improved the ride but were only used a part of the time as they made a lot of drag and ships have to be kept on schedule. Back then shipping containers were not a common thing and I remember watching the hard working men bringing aboard bananas on their shoulders in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Thanks for posting this video.

This is great footage! I served as a Cruise Assistant on the Santa Mercedes the summer of 1977. I worked directly under the Chief Purser, Cleveland Riley who was a wonderful man. I was eighteen at the time - one of my most memorable experiences ever! Great seeing the Santa Mercedes towards the end of your footage. Thanks for posting this!

Hi George. Let me ask you a question. How dis you get those films??
@gsquarb Жыл бұрын
These films were taken by Robert Swift an Engineer who lived in Potrerillos. He used a 16mm camera. When he retired, he moved to San Diego, CA USA where I live. When he died in 1969, his wife gave me the films. 10 years ago, I had them copied onto DVD and did editing for KZbin.

@@gsquarb Hi George, I may have left a comment on one of your other videos, but trying again just in case. My mom's family (Van Buskirks, Reeds, Lizees) lived in Potrerillos, primarily in the 1930s. I actually have one of the annual holiday newsletters that Robert Swift used to send out with little updates on everyone. It mentions Joe and Annie Gillow, who I assume are your family and connection to the place. Anyway, I'm working on a memoir that chroicals my search for the truth about my grandmother Valeria Van Buskirk (later Reed) and her struggle with mental illness. And I know it's a long shot, but I was wondering if you might have any other Potrerillos memorabilia from that time. I don't know if our families crossed paths, most of mine, including Valeria, had left by the early 1940s. But if you do happen to have any old photos, letters, etc that might mention them I'd love to see them. My email is [email protected] if you'd like to reach out. Kind regards, CJ

Below is an extended, less edited, version posted by Periscope that isn't as compact and shows their pre-cruise decision making. Both versions are good, but "Island of Pleasure" (the version on this page) lacks the cranky husband needing to be convinced. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4Kalqypp8xngqc

The sight of a "five generation 'Irish' American banging on about the 'English' occupation of Northern Ireland is a classic example of sham and selective memory. 1. What the devil is a 'five generation Irish American'? He's just as likely to be a 'fourth generation Italian American' or a 'fifteenth generation Greek.' 2. Occupation of Northern Ireland: The people of Northern Ireland have the right to decide by popular vote when, if ever, they join the Republic of Ireland. 3. Mr 'fifth generation Irish American' has parked his fat bottom on land taken from earlier inhabitants who were dispossessed of their rights by conquest. Is he considering giving it back?

15:53, "If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a million syllables were snapped today as photographers kept looking for that perfect shot." What a fantastic quote, almost poetic. Oh, and this guy, 16:44, he's sure a party pooper, a Debbie downer.
