This would’ve been better if 1) One of you actually had AA status and uses it or 2) You had a guest with status and uses it. These type of discussions are really opinionated and not very informative IMO.

Hotel bookings thru the Chase Portal doesn’t always apply your status/member perks. Sometimes the hotel doesn’t see your member number. All they see is the 3rd party booking

@CallMeLani My wife and I are going to Singapore next year. Marina Bay Sands is on our bucket list too. I booked it through the Chase Travel Portal. That $1k price tag makes a person gulp. 70k UR points was a little easier to swallow. 😊

Choice is great for peak season or high demand (events), weekends, etc. Cambria is great. Don't' forget the ability to book Preferred Hotels. While IHG is great for 4 nights, Hilton/Marriot 5th night free. Choice can be a great 1-2 night option that is an alternative to Hyatt. I'm going to focus on WF 1:2 for Choice, and save my TYP for 1:4 iprefer (Preferred Hotels). Also, they're changing from booking 100days ahead to 50 weeks ahead.

A restaurant my gf likes (me not so much, and not because of the fee) charges 5% fee for using a cc. We only go when she really really wants to go. Other places that do around here are less and actually good so idc.

Regarding swipe fees, most establishments are paying between 2.7%- 4%. If the fee is over 4% I’m not supporting that establishment. I’m cool paying the cost of the transaction but when I get Vietnamese food I’m not interested in paying a fee effectively to deter credit card usage. Over here some of the best Korean and Vietnamese either don’t take credit card or charge a fee. Most times I eat the fee because it’s usually 3% and it’s usually a top notch place.

I went to my favorite pizza place and they had a 3% surcharge on cards and I informed them that you’ve been paying these fees for the last 15 years you’ve been open so have you been taking losses all this time? I walked out and never went back. I found another very good pizzeria that doesn’t charge the extra fee and never looked back.

I know where you’re coming from Matt. I burn faster than I can earn so I always have a Chase UR deficit. We’d be in such a better position if chase gave out UR like Amex gives out MR points with their offers but alas that isn’t the case. You should PC the slate into a freedom. I can’t remember if I heard it here first, but some mom and pops and medium size retailers allow you to pay with the PayPal app. There goes 5x for another couple of weeks with things like gas, CVS, etc.

I had a similar question when I got into the points of Miles game of what's a good road trip card. What works for me is the AMEX green card. I get 3x restaurant travel and transit. I use my green card to book two Hyatt stays over the summer during the double points promo. The annual fee is not for everyone but I use clear.

Thanks for taking my question. I agree with RJ on business cards not having status attached to it. During the process of choosing my partners Marriott had more bad reviews than everybody and I think most of the bad reviews are from business travelers. If you're a business traveler, why is a room upgrade so important to you if you're in town for business. That being said, that's why Hilton is my main hotel now because gold status means something that being said, that's why Hilton is my main hotel now because gold status means something.

On balance, I think we all know that domestic Priority Pass lounges are pretty putrid. My home airport of DFW has "The Club DFW" and it's straight up embarrassing. Granted, access is basically free, so you get what you're not paying for and shouldn't be expecting something luxurious. That being said, for a PP lounge, the Wingtips lounge at Lambert International is pretty good when compared to other PP lounges. It's also not super plush, but for an airport like Lambert, it's surprisingly good.

@mattclausen - I’ve stayed at that Hyatt Place that you stayed at and I got nothing as a Globalist, it sucked. If you went down the street to the Hyatt House then they gave me a bottle of wine and asked me exactly which room that I wanted as a Globalist - every hotel approaches statuses differently. The worst hotel experience that I’ve ever had was the first time with Diamond Status at a Hilton. I’ve had better Hilton stays since then.

You shouldn’t look at status on a per occasion (flight/stay) basis. It should be more of a time % basis. If you take 4 trips per year, what % does your status make a difference? If you get a room upgrade 1x and a flight upgrade 2x, that’s 25% (4 rooms/8 flights)!! If you expect more than that, then you are over valuing your status. Especially if you don’t even have top tier status.

I like the conversation about hotel stays with no status compared to stays with status. Over the summer I stayed at a Hyatt in Minneapolis downtown with no status and put in the notes that it was my daughters 17th birthday and they upgraded us to a corner room with more space and gave her a birthday card and sang happy birthday to her. It made me think. Do I even need Hyatt status what more would I get. Like RJ, I book a hotel stay and don't expect an upgrade or anything. If I get it, I'm happy. My wife is Hilton Gold and whenever we stay at a Hilton we don't expect an upgrade or anything like that. But we do enjoy the perks.

@callmelani - I hit Bilt Platinum Status and I see no need to use this card going forward, I’m mostly just getting 1x on the card since they nerfed Rent Day. This card is now a dud for me and I have Bilt’s top-tier status. WTF? It’s like they don’t want my spend, sure, I don’t rent but I spend $50k+ on the card. I have absolutely no incentive to spend going forward. Bilt has a get transfer partner network but all of my other cards offer me some variant of the same transfer partners. Thanks, Hawaiian. Thanks, Amex.

ALCON, This is really a non story topic! If you have an annual fee card, chances are you will be using the card to trigger a credit or 2. They won’t lower your spending power if you are using the card. It’s the no annual fee non use cards that people sock drawer, that get lowered or cancelled because you’re it not using them. You’re using the cards because you get value, not because you don’t wanna piss them off!!

Can you all elaborate? What exactly is pissing off the bank for not using the card for 6 months? I don't see a problem with AMEX lowering your spending power because you're not going to need it anyway right? In my opinion, at the end of the day I am the customer and I don't have to use your credit card, so if they want to mess with me, I'll just go somewhere else right!?!

I was definitely asking with the idea of points earned via credit cards go away entirely - ie, some law gets passed that only allows for a 1% refund of the purchase with no substitutions or other currencies allowed. It has to be cash, and it has to be 1%. I didn't think about the Chase portal when I asked the question, but in the spirit of the question I believe that is still valid. You can pool up $100 of cash back and redeem for $150 worth of portal stuff on the CSR, since the 50% boost of value is technically a feature of the card. By the same token, the 35% rebate on flights booked with earned cash back through the Amex portal would also apply on the Business Platinum. The 15% rebate on Delta Skymiles bookings for holding the Delta Gold card is also still in, but all the Skymiles have to be earned by flying Delta and not through card transfers. The Diamond status from the Aspire also boosts your Hilton stays to 20x earnings, but again it's Hilton stay earnings only with no contributions form the card. Taking advantage of 0% APR opportunities was also a great add at the end, as that might be a huge differentiator within these rules. Thanks for taking the question and thanks RJ for keeping everyone honest! :)
