Oh, Say Do You Hear (1844) by E.A. Atlee 1. Oh, say do you hear, at the dawn's early light, The shrieks of those bondmen, whose blood is now streaming From the merciless lash, while our banner in sight With its stars, mocking freedom, is fitfully gleaming? Do you see the backs bare? Do you mark every score Of the whip of the driver trace channels of gore? And say, doth our star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave? 2. On the shore, dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep, Where Afric's race in false safety reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it heedlessly sweeps, half conceals, half discloses? 'Tis a slave ship that's seen, by the morning's first beam, And its tarnished reflection pollutes now the stream: 'Tis our star-spangled banner! Oh! When shall it wave O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave! 3. And where is the band, who so valiantly bore The havoc of war, and the battle's confusion, For Liberty's sweets? We shall know them no more: Their fame is eclispsed by foul Slavery's pollution. No refuge is found on our unhallowed ground, For the wretched in Slavery's manacles bound; While our star-spangled banner in vain boasts to wave O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave! 4. Shall we ne'er hail the day when as freemen shall stand The millions who groan under matchless oppression? Shall Liberty's shouts, in our heaven-rescued land, Ne'er be shared by the slave in our blood-guilty nation? Oh, let us be just, ere in God we dare trust; Else the day will o'er take us when perish we must; And our star-spangled banner at half mast shall wave O'er the death-bed of Freedom-the home of the slave.

Too high pitched. Even the corrupted renditions are difficult to sign. I wish someone can up with a more friendly pitch.

I don't mean to rain on their parade but this poem wasn't set to music until 1931. Although this tune was certainly known by 1814, the decision to pair The Star Spangled Banner with an old English drinking song was not made until 1931. I suppose that had someone made this pairing upon the writing of the poem, this might have been what it would have sounded like, but then again, women weren't allowed in taverns in 1814 except in their capacity as prostitutes so I can't give them points for historical accuracy.

Priceless! Somehow it's fitting that the national anthem of our beloved country is based on an 18th-century drinking song. Compatriots, let us think of creativity, learning from our ancestors, a sense of our history, AND our senses of humor....
@dillonweaver23073 ай бұрын
This is like exactly how I was taught in choir but just so much faster I don’t get why tho it doesn’t really show what you can do with those notes if your practiced enough. I guess maybe why we did it so much slower so we had to be much more careful of mistakes. For me this is way easier for sure I don’t have to show off myself as much and even when I do I can speed thru it and not really have too hold a note for very long.

Just like the Star-Spangled Banner, every stanza ends with the same set of words. Whenever you sing "the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave" you are secretly singing "the myrtle of Venus and Bacchus' vine."

The idea that the tune that was likely written in 1776 would become the melody for the Star Spangled Banner is amazing

That had to be really hard for them to learn if they're Americans. That's a song that everybody knows, but now they have to sing it a different way. You definitely can't go on autopilot with that one or you'll mess up and sing the version you know.

How on earth did the national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner," manage to emerge from the absolute dumpster fire that is its tune? Seriously, I’ve heard alley cats screeching a more harmonious duet than this mess. It’s atrocious. Sure, we can tip our hats to the fact it’s from an era when musical taste was as refined as a muddy boot, but really.

Did your realy listen to the song as it talked about the death of the slave (the third stanza)
@Kalan094 ай бұрын
It’s not talking about a slaves death. Words are meant to be interpreted in poetry. Slave used to also be used to mean ‘highly devoted’ for example. Not everything is black and white, stop trying to censor our beautiful national anthem, and stop being a baby.

The battle of For McHenry is hardly the defining moment in our history. Maybe it should be a song about the goals and achievements of the country. Here's a new one called U.S. Freedom, Happiness, And Prosperity. It's in 5/4 time. (Verse 1) In the land of commerce and innovation, A nation born of dreams and determination. With a curious mind and a pragmatic heart, We strive for progress, a work of art. (Chorus) Oh, the stars and stripes, in in our hearts we sing, For the pursuit of freedom, prosperity, and happiness bring. From the shackles of the past, we rise, United we stand, under open skies. (Verse 2) A history complex, a tapestry we weave, Progressive ideals against oppression, we grieve. Yet, ambition and greed, a double-edged sword, Propelled us forward, a nation adored. (Chorus) Oh, the stars and stripes, in our hopes we sway, Through highs and lows, we find our way. For the pursuit of freedom, prosperity, and happiness bright, From independence won with French embrace. (Verse 3) New Orleans' fever led to a deal, Doubling our borders, a destiny to fulfill. Westward we ventured, in a quest for more, Under Jefferson's rule, a chapter to explore. (Chorus) Oh, the stars and stripes, in our hopes we thrive, Through struggles and victories, we revive. For the pursuit of freedom, prosperity, and happiness so true, The slave war ended a dark era's reign. (Verse 4) Industrialization brought wealth and might, Monopolies rose, casting shadows bright. Oligarchs and fortunes, a growing divide, Yet innovation soared, on progress we ride. (Chorus) Oh, the stars and stripes, in every street we dance, In the pursuit of justice, we advance. For the pursuit of freedom, prosperity, and happiness high, Through civil rights battles, and lunar landings in the sky. (Bridge) But let's not forget, in this anthem's tale, The lows we faced, where justice seemed to fail. From Native trails of tears, to Vietnam's strife, A journey marred by shadows in life. (Verse 5) Jim Crow's grip and inequality, Challenges persist, a nation's plea. Systemic struggles, a call to mend, For in unity, our wounds shall mend. (Chorus) Oh, the stars and stripes, in our memories we stand, A nation evolving, hand in hand. For the pursuit of freedom, prosperity, and happiness so grand, Through mistakes and triumphs, we grow. (Outro) So here's to the land of the brave and free, of our dreamland we sing, our anthem's decree. For the pursuit of freedom, prosperity, and happiness, A beacon of hope, in the winds that blow.

1 To Anacreon in Heav'n, where he sat in full Glee, A few Sons of Harmony sent a Petition, That he their Inspirer and Patron would be; When this answer arriv'd from the Jolly Old Grecian "Voice, Fiddle, and Flute, "no longer be mute, "I'll lend you my Name and inspire you to boot, "And, besides I'll instruct you, like me, to intwine "The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine." 2 The news through Olympus immediately flew; When Old Thunder pretended to give himself Airs. "If these Mortals are suffer'd their Scheme to persue, "The Devil a Goddess will stay above Stairs. "Hark! already they cry, "In transports of Joy, "Away to the Sons of Anacreon we'll fly,[28] "And there, with good Fellows, we'll learn to intwine "The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine. 3 "The Yellow-Hair'd God and his nine fusty Maids, "From Helicon's banks will incontinent flee,[29] "Idalia will boast but of tenantless Shades, "And the bi-forked Hill a mere Desart will be "My Thunder no fear on't, "Shall soon do it's Errand, "And dam'me! I'll swinge the Ringleaders, I warrant. "I'll trim the young Dogs, for thus daring to twine "The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine." 4 Apollo rose up, and said, "Pry'thee ne'er quarrel, "Good King of the Gods, with my Vot'ries below: "Your Thunder is useless"-then shewing his Laurel, Cry'd "Sic evitabile fulmen,[30] you know! "Then over each head "My Laurels I'll spread; "So my Sons from your Crackers no Mischief shall dread, "Whilst snug in their Club-Room, they jovially twine "The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine." 5 Next Momus got up with his risible Phiz, And swore with Apollo he'd chearfully join- "The full Tide of Harmony still shall be his, "But the Song, and the Catch, and the Laugh shall be mine. "Then, Jove, be not jealous "Of these honest fellows." Cry'd Jove, "We relent, since the Truth you now tell us; "And swear by Old Styx, that they long shall intwine "The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine." 6 Ye Sons of Anacreon, then join Hand in Hand; Preserve Unanimity, Friendship, and Love! 'Tis your's to support what's so happily plann'd; You've the sanction of Gods, and the Fiat of Jove. While thus we agree, Our Toast let it be. May our Club flourish happy, united, and free! And long may the Sons of Anacreon intwine The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine.
