the Boronia rail crossing, I believe, was considered the most dangerous in the state, with 27 fatalities in the newspaper posts shown in this video. There was a problem that Dorset and Boronia Roads didn't meet at right angles, and, of course, before the time of boom gates, and even flashing lights with bells ringing, you had to know when the train was coming. This crossing was obviously an early candidate for grade separation.

For a time, I lived in a unit just across the road from the scout hall, on Chandler Rd. It was actually a very good unit, close to shops, and the railway station, but set back from the road enough to have peace and quiet. It also backed onto a nature reserve behind Rangeview Primary School.

I remember the Rangeview Rd milk bar from when I was attending Rangeview Primary school, it was just across the road. We used to by a whole Boston bun there for 20 cents.

An interesting history. Although I'd managed the signals in Dorset Rd and Boronia Rd and environs for 15+ years after the train line went underground, I never went into the mall 'proper'... but the photos show that it was very much a 'Doncaster Shoppingtown' wannabe, down to the facades of the shops, the suspended 'fountain', the 'split level' walkways & stairs and the 'crossbridges' between the 'upper levels'... all of which were quite different to Eastland, Chadstone (at the time) and Box Hill Plaza (around a similar time). Fascinatin'...

I live in Boronia not far from the glorious old Boronia Mall. I remember going there not long after it first opened and remembering how busy it was. Now, sadly, it is akin to a ghost mall a ghost town with so many closed businesses, only a very few remain that are active. Many attempts over the years have been made to revive the Mall but they have all failed. Many factors have led to its huge demise and decline one of which would have been Knox Shopping Centre. Ps: I love the old tiled wall in the Mall it serves as a reminder of how things once were and should be classified as old forgotten art.

a train line probably guaranteed that Boronia would be a suburb, and not a backwater. But the crossing proved to be one of the most dangerous built. It went underground in line with the trend that was to come. It's two large shopping squares continue to attract patronage from a good reach, and densification with townhouses and apartments, is an obvious trend around the central district. Picturesque and still without congested throng, except on AFL Grandfinal day at Dan Murphy's, Boronia offers underrated amenity. ,

the Boronia Progress Hall is a kind of send up of Boronia, in that the building has remained largely untouched from times past. It is the antithesis of progress. But Boronia has one of the most picturesque settings in Melbourne, and plenty of shops, punching above it's weight because of mountain catchment. Compared to closer in suburbs, it has loads of parking and less of the rush of the modern day. An underrated suburb.
