Never heard of this wreck but I do want to dive this Location one day.
@normanbraslow79022 жыл бұрын
When I dove the wreck 50 years ago, there was virtually nothing left. Even less now. Not worth the trouble. She's 90 feet deep at the bow, 120 feet at the stern. Can quite cold. The rumor is that she was carrying $100,000 worth of gold in a safe, encapsulated in melted Catalina tile. Believe it?

The person doing the video has a SAC rate of a mouse ha ha. Assuming an Al 80 cfu tank, I calculate their SAC to be 17.722 psi/minute with RVM of 0.44305 ft^3/min, wow! Is that correct?

There are no more sea urchins at this dive spot. I used to see many but as of a year ago and more recently 2 days ago I saw zero-and I mean ZERO. Also, zero legal sized bass, zero corbina, and zero adult sheephead. Also, the rocks are now covered in growth.

90 ft for 29 minutes on air? Your into decompression time. Too risky on a single tank. Does anyone consult dive tables?
@johnbspringer2 жыл бұрын
PADI decompression time starts at 30 min, however; they should have performed the required safety stop
@uncatila6 жыл бұрын
Why are they not diving down directly onto the wreck? Swimming along the bottom to the wreck only shortens the time you have on the wreck and pumps your tissues full of nitrogen. Get rid of this floppy split find and get a full legged kick.

Thanks for the video Jay. Great shooting. My buddy Mark and I dive casino point and many of the other island spots regularly. We have been wanting to hit the Valiant for a few years now. I have a couple questions. Did you guys need a permit or let Harbor patrol know you were going there? I was told that you had to let them know and I don't know if that is even true. I also noticed you guys entered from the beach near the cabanas down the way from the Casino. I was thinking about doing that also. I noticed you guys swam to a buoy line. Is there any in particular buoy that we should look for? When you guys got to the bottom how did you know which way to go? Any advice? Is the wreck in mostly 85 feet. I thought it was actually deeper from other posts I have been reading. Thanks a bunch. Greg

I dove it last Wednesday. Excellent dive. very large and parts still semi intact after all these years. Morays have taken residence too. It can be about 110 ft at deepest but most is 95ish.. Its between 2nd and 3rd large buoy from the edge of Dive Park, out in front of Descanso as seen in this video. Call the Avalon Harbormaster...fill out short form..they did not give me any problem whatsoever...it has directions to wreck on it and also the Dive shop guys will help too. Go on weekday to get Ok and avoid boat traffic which imho is #1 concern. Depth, air and decompression also could be an issue. I use 100cu ft and pony. Nitrox with 100cu ft would have been even better. btw...Giant Sea Bass congregating at Dive Park right now approx 20+.

Gregory Lambert navigation on the surface to the wreck. Don t swim along the bottom at depth burning up air and pushing your bottom time past non decompression limits. Do a safety stop at 15 feet as a precaution. Pat Fealy LA County / NAUI underwater instructor.

I"m just seeing your comment 2 months later. During the year the water temp will range from the high 50's to mid 60's. I had logged a water temperature of 61 degrees that day.

Hi! Love your video! That looks so fun! I was wondering how deep you were? I free dive and was wondering if that might be a cool place.
@laguna0078 жыл бұрын
+Brooke Schulte. Hi, thank you for your question. The depth at this location averages about 35-40 ft depending on the tide. Yes, this is an awesome place to dive. It's is a great location because of the variety of fish that frequent this reef. Outside of the typical Garibaldi and Sheephead, we've also recently seen schools of yellow tail jack, pacific barracuda. Late November, a grey whaled had passed while we were in the water. Unfortunately, I didn't catch that on video. The sea lions like to hang out on seal rock. They're curious and like to interact with the divers. This video was taken in late 2013 when there was still a lot of kelp in the area. The kelp is gone for now from the warmer el nino waters and storms from last year. So the ecosystem is a different than what it was in my 2013 video. Typical visibility at Crescent Bay is 15-20ft. This happened to be a 40ft visibility day when there was very little water movement for a time usually around the Nov-Dec timeframe.

+Jay Atienza Wow! Thank you! I'm aware that harmless leopard sharks can be spotted in that area sometimes however I was also wondering if the presence of Sea Lions attracted bigger sharks?

+TheMermaidtetra The only shark species I've run into there are horn sharks, leopard sharks, and an occasional swell sharks. I haven't seen or heard any reports of bigger sharks at Crescent Bay. BTW...Cool mermaid videos! :)

What type of camera and light?
@laguna00710 жыл бұрын
Hi. I use an Isaw A3 Extreme. It has an aqua mode that color corrects for underwater shooting. No red filter needed. My light isn't anything special. I just use an older Princeton Tec shockwave that I'd like to upgrade one day.
@soxfan191910 жыл бұрын
Jay Atienza Jay, thanks so much. We use a Princeton Tec and UK Cannon as primaries, along with an Intova camera. Just wondering how one might mount the camera to that particular light.
@laguna00710 жыл бұрын
I use one of the sticky mounts on top of my light to mount my camera. My buddy in the video mounts his the same way for his gopro. I like it because it's a one handed setup. I need a way to diffuse the light to reduce the hotspots. Otherwise it works for now.

This is a great video. Is the surge usually that nonexistent at Crescent?
@laguna00710 жыл бұрын
Thanks! During the November- December months there is very little surge. Around this time the swells are roughly 1-2 ft. With very little movement in the water you may find visibility around 30-40 ft. The typical visibility during the rest of the year ranges from 10-20 ft.
