Fabulous work Barn. Wonderful to see you take a humble utensil and turn it into a piece of art that will be admired.and give pleasure for years to come. There is no subtitute for superb craftsmanship. I have your book which is treasured for being the bible that it is. James Krenov would have been proud of you. Salute!

Lol , your book "Spon" is sitting in front of me on the coffee table. I would never have noticed how many different carving techniques you used in this short clip , if I hadn't read the book;) The book goes back to the "Art Colt" in 3 days, I will have it finished by then;)

Great skill master carver! As you do the soon in one go, I am wondering if the wood doesn't oxidize in the light (getting darker on the surface)?

Yes it does. I was watching Andy Spoons carving a spoon the other day and, as he sliced pieces off, the place he had just sliced was perceptibly lighter than the area next to it which he hadn't touched for a while. I can't remember what wood it was, I have an idea it may have been either Huon Pine or Silky Oak or, possibly, prunus.

As someone working on learning to carve spoons without actually owning any spoons made by reputable carvers from which to study, videos like this are VERY helpful. Thanks Barn!

Is there such a thing as a battle spoon? I’d love to see Bran’s approach to a bloody huge spoon for bashing a hypothetical opponent. A spoon road not taken? Alternate spoon warfare history.

I just started playing around with spoon carving. I have a few videos up if you wouldn't mind critiquing me and give me some pointers? I can't not find any one local for guidance. I curious about what ax you recommend for trimming. Right now I'm just using a 3 1/2 inch carving Mora and a Mora hook knife. You do some beautiful work! Thumbs up and subbed!
