The neighborhoods were what made the place special.

How lovely is a proud New Yorker I am so proud to be from this wonderful beautiful state I just hope that a lot of New Yorkers know that we have our New York City flag and start rocking it because I see all this Southern States rocking their flags as if they are the only ones with flags we have Flags too

My husband and I grew up on Staten Island in the 40’s and 50’s. It was very rural with plenty of open lands. We both took the ferry to work in NY city. After the bridge opened to Brooklyn, houses rose in prices. We moved with our family to New Jersey and bought a beautiful large home, never looked back

Was born on Staten Island in '71, lived there until 1998. Can't tell you how many times I heard the expression "This borough was nice until that bridge went up and all the shit came over from Brooklyn." :) Ah, good times . . .

Its odd that it once housed all the sick immigrants coming in from the ships until the quarantine war 1858.. so even before they created the city dump it was already a dumping ground for sick people..As a former Islander I've got to hand it to the leaders or whoever was responsible for burying that DUMP THAT STANK TO HIGH HEAVEN.. I felt trapped and despair there I was abandoned there.. and so were my friends.. I felt like it was a place we had to live until we could afford a place in New Jersey or Long Island.. Staten Island has sore memories so anyone that grew up with money on Staten Island I never knew you I don't know where you lived because everyone around me was poor!! "Mom how come there's no big houses anywhere around here? How come everyone lives in an old small house" Everytime I hear this song I think of Staten Island because that's when I was there that hot stinky summer of 89' .. step-by-step heart-to-heart left right left We All Fall down like toy soldiers.

At the late-Nineties, I remember becoming taken aback from watching our fun roommate CRINGE along with her visiting boyfriend who also hailed from Metro NY to the Staten Islanders' accent that happened to be momentarily broadcast on TV one night there at Vancouver, they were embarassed...nowadays, thick accents are being purposefully wiped out of existence by planted Corporate-speak..........

It was the beginning of the end. I moved to Staten Island in 79, because of love and the love for an Island that was still very rural. I moved to Tottenville. It's been ruined not only by over building, but ignorant people, 8 times out of 10.

I grew up on Staten Island in West Brighton. We had woods at the end of our dead end street , all gone gone now with Brooklyn style houses. The bridge was the progress of the growth that brought on so much of the changes. Much of that neighborhood has change along with the south side of the island. However there is alway some beauty in change along with to the growth. I have good memories of the island and that is a saving grace

Such ignorant near-sightedness by the local suits and tree huggers of the4 60s have stunted the island for generations. The incomplete highway system has crippled traffic and infrastructure. The Richmond Pkwy (Korean) and Willowbrook Expy (MLK) should have been completed, as should have the Shore Front Drive. Anyone driving on SI knows full well that a 10 min trip takes 30-40+ minutes. The island is made of single, narrow, winding horse & buggy roads never meant for the current volume of traffic. MOSES knew this seven decades ago!!!!

I live in Staten Island, these single family homes are SO BORING. if you want to go anywhere, especially where I live, you need to cross busy roads and streets to get to the nearest any business. And I’m lucky, considering I only live a few blocks away. Some people are MILES away from major businesses, and can’t have any fun without making traffic worse by driving more cars. It’s a bad design and I think we need to repeal zoning laws and let these houses make some businesses.
