Indy cars didn't belong there, just too fast. The year before was the fast 500 mile race ever for Indy cars. I was at both races and it was a sad day leaving the track after the helicopter took off.

I watched this crash live and feared the worst after seeing Wilson struck in the head with debris at such a high speed.From all accounts, he was a great person and a helluva driver,R.I.P. Justin Wilson.

the new HALO designs may help, especially if airborne into upper fencing like Wheldon, Krosnoff, Brack, etc... Or debris intrusion like Justin Wilson and Tom Pryce.

Helio was too high in that turn, and if they weren't seven wide on the front stretch, he'd have been further down on the track. You can see at 0:16 how he's still three wide going in. That's a no no.

There was a 2nd car that crashed. After the leader hit the wall, a piece of debris from his car was launched into the air. At about 0:29, that debris made contact with another driver's head(Justin Wilson/blue car). Justin was knocked unconscious and crashed into the inside wall. He died the next day in the hospital.

No the guy in the blue and silver car (Justin Wilson) got hit in the head with a big chunk of debris and died from a head injury

No, not that guy. When that guy crashed, a piece of debris from his car that hit Justin at 0:29 in the slomo footage. You then see Justin's car crash headfirst into the wall (on the right of the screen)

@@INDIGOBLUE555 Nah that was him just bouncing off that wall. The front view of the wall makes it seem like he would hit it head on, but if you look at it from 1:13 you can see it is a curved wall

Yeah, but now the racing is worse. The aeroscreen fucks with the ability of many drivers to pass, and has ruined the performance of many of the drivers on the track.

The most incredible part of this clip is that crash didn’t happen as a direct result of them racing 7 wide, or at least while they were racing 7 wide. Indycar is truly amazing and it’s on its way back to the top! An open wheel spec series that contains oval and circuit tracks, teams both large and small, and drivers from countless different disciplines of Motorsport ALL battling it out on a level playing field, does it get any better than that??!?

The car leading the race crashed and was driving at over 200 miles per hour [320 km/h]. The driver was unhurt but debris from his car flew high into the air and a large, heavy piece hit Justin on the head as he approached the scene of the accident. Justin was unconscious, he was extracted from the car and rushed to hospital. He underwent surgery and was kept on a life support machine until the following day. The decision was then taken to switch off the machine and Justin was pronounced deceased

@@hinkleprincess Actually, there is a condition called brain death, there are a few tests and exams you can do to make sure that there is no longer brain activity. Once you make sure that the brain is dead, you can turn off the ventilator (machine that keeps you breathing). Even if you keep the machine on, the body will collapse in a couple of days and end with a cardiac arrest.
