His too early passing feels like a great loss to classical music. I often find myself wishing I could have heard more of his beautiful, sublime interpretations.

The Pilot did indeed fight until out of fuel, did indeed land safely on the beach and set fire to his aircraft. However, the Boys did not let him fall into enemy hands. He made it safely back with the rest in reality.

Tennstedt greatly admired the Philadelphia Orchestra, which he called "a Bruckner orchestra." But, really, any orchestra he conducted in the music of this composer became a great Bruckner orchestra. Hearing him conduct this piece at Tanglewood in 1975 turned me into lifelong Brucknerian--and Klausketeer!

As a very special bonus to my falling in love with Anton Bruckner's symphonies, I became familiar with the work of Jochum. A very skilled conductor and by all accounts a very kind, warm man. I believe Jochum felt he was too closely associated with Bruckner in the public's consciousness and that he considered himself firstly a conductor of Mozart & Beethoven.

These are incredibly beautiful pictures and it is understandable that a once proud nation should try to glorify such a magnificent defeat in retrospect. The truth is: there were no attacks by air, sea or land by the German army against the defenceless British Expeditionary Force. Not a single shot was fired. The Führer loved the English people as belonging to the Germanic race almost as his own and if there was one thing he did not want, it was to humiliate your fathers and grandfathers. In victory he showed greatness like no field marshal before him, stopping the tanks literally at the last minute and letting them all (!) escape. He offered England his hand. And how did England repay us? From today's perspective, as a German I wish he had at least taken them prisoner of war. Or shot them down to the last man. He had the opportunity to do that at any time. There would have been no today´s Rotherham or Southport. Your towns would still be English towns and they would belong to the English worker. But, at least the Pakis don't speak German, do they? The bad thing is that you have learned nothing from this. If your insane government releases the long-range air missiles against Russia, I might at least be able to see from the north German coast how the perfidious Albion sinks under a 200m high tidal wave.

For Beethoven, nothing compares to Otto Klemperer. Perhaps the Prussian origin of both made Klemperer uniquely prepared to give such pompous renditions of Beethoven symphonies. Glorious indeed.
