I've never been as far as the dam up that road, although a group of us tried to get to it to skate one winter. But the snow was too thick on the ground, and we flagged it away.

Another road I've been along a lot! It's amazing how much your wide-angle lens flattens the hills out ... not complaining, just commenting. A couple of questions - when did they build the retaining wall through the Roseneath cutting, and how long have they been working on the cycleway alongside the Port road? Seems the council has found lots of new ways to waste ratepayers' money since I left Dunedin! 😒

A nice mixed drive, first through the flat agricultural region on the east of the island, then heading into the mountains, with some amazing views. A great opportunity to discover places so far away from my home, thanks a lot for sharing, greetings from a road-tripper from Germany!

One of my favourite rides, most often done on a bicycle, but have done it in a car, just have to be aware the road is narrow in places and you may have to back up a bit if someone coming the other wzy meets up with you.

Another great video of a route I've travelled over many, many times. The last time I went to Shannon (cousin's farm) was in the mid 1990s and that may have been the most recent trip from Outram to Dunedin via Three Mile Hill. Both ways, of course. I lived in North East Valley at that time. Sod-all seems to have changed ... 😃 Keep putting the videos out!

I don't see why not. It's a very nice road, and if you go early in the season then there's a higher chance it will have been newly graded. Take your time, and don't forget to stop at the pub.

Amazing landscapes near The Wakatipu Lake, the road offers great views to the lake and the mountains, it reminds me a lot of some roads in Norway. Extremely beautiful road to drive, possible just with a solid AWD car. Would love to do it once, drove some similar roads in Iceland. Also 2 high passes on the way, a pleasure to watch the whole video and immerse in the wonderful nature, with almost no other people on the road. Thanks a lot for sharing, greetings from a road-tripper from Germany!
@drivedrivedrive8537Ай бұрын
I'd be careful with an AWD, it is generally mostly doable but the point where I dunk the camera (at 1:54:00) is probably not suitable and needs a proper 4x4. Only a very short section, but advisable.

What made you go to Wedderburn? It died along with the railway from Middlemarch to Ranfurly/Alex. Grahame Sydney painted the old railway shed there many moons ago - one of his more famous Maniototo paintings, which I have a print of on my wall here in the UK.
@drivedrivedrive8537Ай бұрын
Always going through Wedderburn on the way to Dunedin - very common route.
@Capfka2 сағат бұрын
Sorry mate, I was thinking of Waipiata, not Wedderburn, for reason. Hard to avoid Wedderburn if you're going to Ranfurly from Alex on the road up the Manuherikia. Although it's now over 20 years since I was in that region, I should have remembered that! If I was driving from the coast to the Maniototo I'd either take the Pig Root or (more commonly) the Middlemarch route. Then I'd turn off into the Ida Valley and go over the hill to Blacks/Ophir from Poolburn, cutting out that entire section of the Ranfurly-Alex road. And vice versa going back.

Wow looks like an amazing drive! What vehicle were you driving? Will be in NZ in October and November, hiring a small motorhome, but doesn't look suitable!
@drivedrivedrive8537Ай бұрын
It depends on the size of the campervan and what your definition of small is, so be sure you want to go before you do. My tip would be to always stay on your side of the road, look ahead as far as you can, and take it easy. It's a beautiful drive.

Wonderful views along this drive, the pass is not a very high one, but you start climbing from sea level. There are some high snowy mountains to be seen, must be great to do some hikes there. The road is also of good quality, a pleasure to drive through such landscapes on a good road with light traffic. Thanks for sharing, always nice to learn more about New Zealand through your videos, thanks for sharing, greetings from a road-tripper from Germany!

It's one of the most frequently closed passes thanks to slips and erosion.It only goes to 562m in altitude, which isn't high by European standards (Stelvio, for example, is at 2,757m). This pass is about winding through narrow valleys and crossing easily flooding rivers. Thanks for your comment, I'm looking forward to a tour of Germany, Austria and Italy next year.

I lived in Oamaru in the seventies and at the age of 18 me and 3 other guys took the afternoon off work and decided to take a booze cruise over the Danseys pass in an old 1954 vauxhall wyvern, we drunk beer all the way over finally stopping at the danseys pass pub of which we were kicked out of after buying just one round, leaving there we only got about 3 miles south of the pub before we rolled the car over a steep bank. 3 of us were thrown from the car but the driver remained inside and was seriously hurt as the roof collapsed on top of him, he spent 3 weeks in the Ranfurly hospital with head injuries and the loss of one of his ears i spent a week their with a cracked vertebrae in my back, thy other two were unharmed, we all were very lucky to be alive as we were going about 70 miles an hour before we flipped the car down a 12 to 15 foot bank. watching this video took me right back to that crazy summer afternoon back in 1978. (Warning) never drink and drive .
