I'm in Dubai right now, and i've noticed it's hit or miss with places coding correctly. I've eaten at several restaurants and maybe 1 out of 3 don't code as dining so I only get 1x with my Savor One. I also have the Altitude Go which has a 4x non warehouse club gas category that I got for the free precheck credit. I've filled up my rental car twice so far and both times it's coded as "other business" and I got only 1x on it. I'm tempted to just use my Venture X on everything from this point on until I go home.

Right i also recall situations in Italy where restaurants didn't code as dining. Just getting 2x on all spend might be the way to go, making the Venture X all the more important overseas. Thanks for watching & sharing your experiences!

Why not pull out the Amex and try and use it every time? Even let them know you might have spent more if they accepted the card. These other countries will not change until you give them a reason. I know AMEX is working on banking relationships in Thailand and other asian countries. You may not want to be so quick to put it away on your future trip. They launched the Platinum Card in Thailand in 2020 and Singapore in 2022. Don't get me wrong. I am still bringing my CSP and CVX if I leave the US and have one handy evne here in the US for that 5% of the time you have a stubborn vendor or COSTCO.
@MontyTheCardNerd
@MontyTheCardNerd 4 күн бұрын
Yeap so in countries like singapore where they generally accept amex & places clearly display which networks they accept, i'll always give amex a go. Just not as keen on that at countries where amex acceptance is much rarer. That's a great point though that you can promise to spend more if they take amex, I never thought of that! Though yes, always need to have a visa and/or mastercard backup. Thanks for watching & for sharing your experience!

They were saying you had too recent an inquiry for an auto loan or other type of credit AND too recent an inquiry for a new credit card but often the system will generate both of those responses for one inquiry, if that one inquiry is a card application inquiry.

Yes that's really annoying with the Venture X and VX Business. It could make sense to time your VX application for right after some of your existing hard inquiries fall off your credit report. That'll also increase your approval chances.

Seems the Venture X with the Wyndham Earner Plus would be a good combo as an alternative. You'd earn 4x on grocery/restaurants, 6x on gas, and put all the remaining spend on the 2x of the Venture X. Hotel spend for a trip if you can find a Wyndham at 6x, or 10x on cars/hotels with the Venture X and 5x on airfare. Just my two cents.
@MontyTheCardNerd
@MontyTheCardNerd 11 күн бұрын
Agree that that's a great alternative combo. While you'll only earn 1 type of transferrable points, the overall multipliers on this duo are stronger as you outlined. Plus if you'll be staying at Wyndham properties, earning Wyndham points may be preferred over Citi Thankyou points. Thanks for sharing!

Great video! I have a tough decision to make. I have this card on my radar, but I'm currently at 5/24 until Feb 2025. I want to get a Chase Marriott Boundless when I'm clear, but I don't want to miss out on this card due to it's easy to achieve bonus since I value AA miles a lot. Hopefully this card is available for a little while.

Thanks for watching! I would probably wait to get the Boundless first (especially if there's the 5 free night bonus), as I don't expect the Aviator Red to go away before February 2025. Even if news gets out today that Citi will be AA's exclusive credit card partner, I imagine that it'll still take some months to finalize the deal. Hopefully AA also gives us prior notice for when the Aviator Red will stop taking new applications, so that we can plan accordingly.

I like credit cards that earn transferrable points, especially those that have relatively lower annual fees, since you can get great value without the upfront cost being too high. Such cards include the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Citi Strata Premier. Another one is the Amex Gold ... while the annual fee is higher at $325, it's very valuable if you can organically use the credits. Thanks for watching!

I wonder if there is any data that shows the rate of specific credit card point devaluation over time versus that of US inflation. Feel like it would be relatively hard/impossible to quantify given the versatility of some credit card points like AMEX/Chase/Capital One etc and the fact that redemptions can be so specific, but it would be interesting to see the comparison between for example redeeming 80,000 chase UR points to book a 4 night Park Hyatt stay 3 years ago worth $2000 in 2019 vs redeeming 120,000 Chase UR points to book a 4 night PH stay today worth $3000 (completely arbitrary numbers). Would give a better sense of whether some credit card points are truly being devalued relatively speaking. Great video!

@MontyTheCardNerd 28 күн бұрын
Interesting thoughts, that could be very insightful though for the reasons you highlighted, probably a tricky exercise. Ultimately for points & miles, i think earn & burn is almost always the way to go if possible, whereas doing that for cash probably won't land you in a good spot long term. Thanks for watching!

I applied for the Venture X last year in Aug 2023 and was declined. I applied for the Venture card this month and got declined again. The reason I was given was that there are too many active credit cards based on my loan history. I do have 12 personal cards. My current credit score is 816 and I have 4 hard enquiries. Should I consider closing some of cards or wait until the enquiries fall off before I can apply again?
@MontyTheCardNerd
@MontyTheCardNerd Ай бұрын
Closing some of your cards can definitely improve your approval chances. That said, I would generally avoid closing your oldest cards and cards that you get good organic value from. Waiting for inquiries to fall off can certainly help too. Reducing your overall credit limit may also improve your approval chances. This can be done by simply calling the issuer and asking for the credit limit reduction. Good potential alternative to closing cards.
